A member of the self-styled National Equilibrium group confirmed to CNN that Venezuelan government security officials located Óscar Pérez in the El Junquito area of Libertador municipality, west of Caracas, CNN reported.
The ex-policeman was killed in a clash with Venezuela's National Police on Monday morning, a high-ranking Venezuelan government source told CNN.
The source did not want to be identified because she was not authorized to discuss the case. The government of Venezuela has not issued an official pronouncement on Pérez's death.
CNN has not been able to confirm independently that Pérez died.
Pérez is the ex-inspector of the Venezuelan scientific police who challenged the security of the Venezuelan state when he stole a helicopter and attacked the headquarters of several public institutions in Caracas in mid-2017. On Monday morning, security forces from the Venezuelan government located Oscar Pérez in the El Junquito area in the Libertador municipality, northwest of Caracas.
From early Monday morning, Pérez posted several videos on his social network showing that he was sheltered in a room with other members of his team. Perez, bloodied, reported that members of the police fired at him. However, the constituent Diosdado Cabello reported on his Twitter account that Pérez "attacked those around him, wounding two FAES officials, the security forces responded to the fire."
In a statement, the Ministry of People's Power for Interior Relations, Justice and Peace confirmed that the group they called terrorists had been dismantled and reported that some members were killed while five were arrested. The ministry did not identify the dead or the learned. Two soldiers of the national police also died in the confrontation and five were seriously wounded, according to the statement.
