In the age of plague and pestilence, the flu isn't the only disease mutating to become more deadly. The MERS virus (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) was responsible for infecting over 2000 reported cases in 2017 and 30% of them resulted in a fatality. The last new mutation was reported to have a Reduced Affinity to Human CD26 and the rate of mortality is now 35% or greater. Although this isn't being labeled as a pandemic or anything, reports say this is more likely because of a fear of panic and trust loss from the general population. Just like the Bird Flu, the MERS virus was also a likely candidate for a mutation that could cause a pandemic throughout the world. Though no further news about the current possible mutation is out this at the time, it is important to keep this in mind with all the other outbreaks and diseases floating around right now.
