As someone that has played Smash Bros often but mainly only locally with friends for silly old fun, and otherwise being competitive to an extent either with 1v1 fights with them or playing Melee online through Slippi...but aside from that, I had zero competitive experience until I got roped into a local group of Ultimate players.
And after a few times of showing up at their friendly sessions of Smash, those eventually started turning into tournament sessions. And later on, they went from organized mainly for the people in the group to announcing the tourneys publicly for anyone interested (and lives here) to try it out, as the current one that will have happened at the time of writing this, will be a prelude to a big one being planned for August.
...So...how did that go?

The Ultimate hammer and nail experience
I once heard a saying about in fighting games, sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail. I guess that would be the best way to describe my Ultimate tournament experience at this point: Most of the time it's either fights where I manage to take the lead by experience difference (which gives me something of a thing)...or I end up facing players who have well-optimized combos or approaches that I don't manage to win against.
In my second tournament it was more hammer than nail, but eventually I was eliminated by ssaunter who at the beginning I got a game out of him with Terry, but he took out his "Samus cheesy", and I don't even remember who ended up eliminating me.
In the third tournament (the one before this one), I ended up facing my brother (OnE) in the first round, and after being 1-1, I decided to keep my Dr Mario to beat his Link "classic style".
A very close battle...but he managed to beat me in the end.
In Losers, the highlight I remember was facing someone I took one from with Terry, he beat me with his Terry, and I managed to finish him off with a Dr. Mario spike.
And then losing to Laqsative's mighty Incineroar.
Now what happened in this new tournament that I came back from last night?
Out and out. Eliminated from Winners by ShantaeLD with Lucina, and from Losers by GolazoRP's Ken, who had stood out at the start of the tournament by taking a game from "pp" (one of the best in the tournament).
Oh well, at least it was worth the try. A friend of mine who was there too (John Silver) managed to win his first game in Winners, but was eliminated to Losers by the aforementioned Laqsative, and both he and OnE were eliminated in Losers Round 3.
...But then there's the other side.
The World Melee Fights
While there was more competition in Ultimate, due to the speed of Melee, tech specific (L-Cancel and Wavedashes in particular) and that there are few who have years of experience with this game, this was the one I had the best chance at thanks to growing up with my two brothers playing Melee as their first Smash game...and not being able to practice Ultimate outside of these events.
In the second tournament, which was also my first Melee tournament, I won my first game and was sent to Losers by ssaunter, who I highlight here for being the one who practiced Melee the most playing online and even assisted in some out of state tournaments, besides being the main support for this game here. I had to fight John Silver, and then two players who excel in Ultimate...but were out of their element in Melee but still put up a fight (the second was the aforementioned pp, who took me out a game) until I was eliminated by Mysterion, who was another one of the few who practiced Melee and made it to finals against ssaunter, leaving his Falco on the brink until he had to switch to Marth to take his throne.
It's funny that reviewing my career in the third tournament...it was very similar to what I experienced in this tournament: A few games and I ended up fighting against ShantaeLD's Peach, who I was able to take a game against but ended up losing, and then I fought against Dimo, who so far is known for having won the two previous Ultimate tournaments...and even though he is not so used to Melee, you can tell that he practiced and adapted to play with Marth. I also beat him in one game but he beat me 1-3.
Then in this last Melee tournament so far...I faced killeroo...and it was entertaining but I ended up winning 2-0 since he wasn't as used to Melee as he is in Ultimate.
It was my turn to fight ShantaeLD immediately after. And I actually didn't remember that I faced him in the last tournament. After losing to him in Melee, I said "now here comes the good stuff"...and I lost 2-0 to his Peach.
Then I had to face John Silver in Losers...and this time instead of using Game and Watch like in previous tournaments, he used Luigi. I beat him in the first game, I beat him in the second game.
*And he knows for a fact that he has played Melee several times with me but he doesn't play it and he didn't grow up with it, so he is not at the same level as the rest of us.
But I managed to beat him the third one, and it hurt him to have been so close to taking me out, but we both agreed that that was the most epic game for us in the tournament, especially with how the special music came out in Final Destination.
Then after several games waiting, it was my turn against my brother (OnE), a rematch but in Melee. And as I mentioned before, we grew up playing Melee first so the only advantage I could have would be any techniques and practice I had in previous tournaments and playing online.

Dr. Mario vs Roy: Victory for me.
Dr. Mario vs Link: We were down to a stock...Up B and he took me out of the arena.
I was thinking about changing character with how the game looked at that point, but I decided to stay with Dr. Mario for that classic pride (and beat him with the Doc as I wanted), and put the final music for the final fight...
...I lost two stocks against him, since he managed to push me away with his attacks and fly me out with the Up B.
Conclusion?
nope
Turns out that game against him was Best of 5...so we were 1-2, but it ends with whoever gets 3 wins.
I had to eat my pride and take out the forbidden steps.
My brother went to play soccer after that (he had it pending and was hoping to leave quickly at that time) but took it pretty well although saying he was "caught cold" after that time we thought it was over.
It's a possibility, but I also see it that his Link's weak point, that he left himself open after an Up B, Down Air or a failed grab...was much more exploitable thanks to Falcon's very famous knee.
...And after that I faced off against Dimo, who I used both Falcon and Dr. Mario on...but lost 3-0. His battles were pretty respectable with that he dropped 2-3 to ssaunter and he beat Mysterion after this fight, but ended up eliminated by ShantaeLD.
To everyone's surprise, the one who ended up winning the tournament was Shantae. After two tournaments dominating Melee, someone was able to beat him. Although I later found out that the two of them had been playing Melee for quite a while, so it kind of makes sense, but it was still a surprise...I just missed it because I was singing Karaoke downstairs 😂.
Conclusion, this time for real
It's great to be able to play Smash Bros with people instead of bots, and when it's starting or ending the tournament, there's usually a chance to play multi-player friendlies to try out other characters. But it's also great to be able to test my Melee skills in the most optimal setup possible for this game: On CRT with a real console, Gamecube controllers and Slippi to optimize the game...instead of playing online with a Genius controller that might have some lag if I end up playing with someone from far away.
And let's see how it will be the next time I get to a tournament (if not before I end up playing in more friendlies sessions), this time planned to be in a mall and possibly with people from other states with the plan to have prize money. Whether or not I get to play that day, I do want to be there to see it in my city :)

Creo que esa sería la mejor forma de describir mi experiencia en torneos de Ultimate a este punto: La mayoría del tiempo o son combates en el que logro tomar la delantera por diferencia de experiencia (que me da algo de cosa)...o termino enfrentándome a jugadores que tienen bien optimizados sus combos o acercamientos contra los que no logro ganar.
En mi segundo torneo fue mas clavo que martillo, pero eventualmente fui eliminado por ssaunter que al principio le saqué una partida con Terry, pero me sacó su "Samus cheesy", y ni recuerdo quien me terminó de eliminar.
En el tercer torneo (el anterior a este), terminé enfrentando a mi hermano (OnE) en la primera ronda, y después de quedar en 1 a 1, decidí mantener a mi Dr Mario para ganarle a su Link "a lo clásico".
Una batalla muy reñida...pero que al final me logró ganar.
En Losers, lo más destacable que recuerdo fue enfrentarme a alguien a quien le saqué una con Terry, me ganó el con su Terry, y logré rematarlo con un spike de Dr. Mario.
Y luego perder contra el poderoso Incineroar de Laqsative.
Ahora que pasó en este nuevo torneo del que regresé anoche?

Tuve que pelear con John Silver, y luego con dos jugadores que destacan en Ultimate...pero estaban fuera de su elemento en Melee pero aún así dieron pelea (el segundo fue el antes mencionado pp, que me sacó una partida) hasta que fui eliminado por Mysterion, quien era otro de los pocos que practicaba Melee y llegó a finales contra ssaunter, dejando a su Falco al borde hasta que tuvo que cambiar a Marth para tomar su trono.
Es gracioso que revisando mi carrera en el tercer torneo...fuera muy parecida a lo que experimenté en este torneo: Unas partidas y terminé peleando contra el Peach de ShantaeLD, que le pude sacar una partida pero terminé perdiendo, y luego peleé contra Dimo, quien hasta ahora es conocido por haber ganado los dos torneos de Ultimate anteriores...y a pesar de que el no acostumbra tanto Melee, se nota que practicó y adaptó para jugar con Marth. Pero logré ganarle la tercera, y le dolió haber estado tan cerca de sacarme, pero ambos estuvimos de acuerdo que esa fue la partida más épica para nosotros en el torneo, especialmente con como salió la música especial en Final Destination.
Entonces después de varias partidas esperando, llegó mi turno contra mi hermano (OnE), una revancha pero en Melee. Y como mencioné antes, crecimos jugando primero con Melee así que la única ventaja que podía tener yo sería cualquier técnica y práctica que tuviera en torneos anteriores y jugar online.

Resulta que esa partida contra el era Mejor de 5...osea que habíamos quedado 1-2, pero la cosa termina para quien llegue a tres victorias.
Tuve que comerme mi orgullo y sacar los pasos prohibidos.
Mi hermano fue a jugar fútbol después de eso (lo tenía pendiente y esperaba salir rápido a esa hora) pero lo tomó bastante bien aunque diciendo que "lo agarraron frio" después de ese rato que pensabamos que ya había terminado.
Es una posibilidad, pero también lo veo yo que el punto débil de su Link, que se dejara abierto después de un Up B, Down Air or un agarre fallido...fue mucho más explotable gracias a la famosísima rodilla de Falcon.
...Y después de eso me enfrenté contra Dimo, al cual le usé tanto Falcon como Dr. Mario...pero perdí 3-0. Sus batallas fueron bastante respetables con eso que dejó 2-3 a ssaunter y que le ganó a Mysterion después de esta pelea, pero terminó eliminado por ShantaeLD.
Para sorpresa de todos, el que terminó ganando el torneo fue Shantae. Después de dos torneos dominando Melee, alguien lo pudo derrotar. Aunque después me enteré que ellos dos jugaban Melee desde hace un buen tiempo, así que tiene algo de sentido, pero aún así fue una sorpresa...solo que no lo vi por estar cantando en el Karaoke en el piso de abajo 😂
Conclusión, esta vez de verdad
Es genial poder jugar Smash Bros con gente en vez de con bots, y cuando va empezando o terminando el torneo, suele haber oportunidad de jugar friendlies de varios jugadores para probar otros personajes. Pero también es genial poder probar mi habilidad en Melee en el setup más óptimo posible para este juego: En CRT con una consola real, controles de Gamecube y Slippi para optimizar el juego...en vez de jugar online con un control Genius y que podría tener algo de lag si termino jugando con alguien de muy lejos.
Y a ver como será la próxima vez que llegue a un torneo (si no es que antes termino jugando en más sesiones de friendlies), esta vez planificado para estar en un centro comercial y posiblemente con gente de otros estados con el plan de tener premio. Aún si llegue o no jugando ese día, si que quiero estar ahí para ver eso en mi ciudad :)
