In the last London Steem Community Meetup, I was speaking to the amazing and the conversation went to my interest in vintage cameras. Many of my cameras were made in the former Soviet Union countries, including Ukraine.
One of my favourite cameras is the legendary Zenit-E. Now, there's nothing legendary about the camera itself. Apparently, it is considered a 'junk camera' in Russia and Ukraine.
What is legendary about it, which is why I love it so, is the lens it was shipped with - the Helios-44-2.
Some of my favourite photos I've ever taken were with this lens. I owned three cameras that all came with this lens - Zenit-E, Zenit-12XP and PrinzeFlex 500. The Prinzeflex is really a Zenit-E, but with a label glued on top of the Zenit branding. It was hilarious to me when the label fell off and the camera instantly reverted to being a Zenit-E.
Apart from film photography, this lens is also quite popular in the digital photography world. The architecture of the lens gives it some special characteristics that are so beloved - both for photography and cinematography. Ironically, those characteristics were perceived as imperfections back in those days.
Up till today, I get comments on my YouTube videos I made about this camera, mostly from ex-Soviet nations, saying how the camera is 'ugly' or 'junk'. They also comment on how I pronounce Zenit incorrectly. I am proud to announce that I now know how to correctly pronounce it properly thanks to :)
Peace and Love ✌🏿
