Weather
Delaware is divided into just three counties, the fewest of any state in the Union. It is almost entirely within the Coastal Plain and it’s highest point is only 450 feet (140m) above Sea Level. The Atlantic is the primary reason for Delaware’s weather patterns, the state being significantly warmer in the south (near the ocean) than in the north.
Delaware is quite temperate with it’s all time high being 110F (43 C) and the all time low of -17F (-27C). Both the high and the low were recorded at Millsboro.
Fauna and Flora
Delaware is almost entirely coastal plain but supports a surprising amount of plant diversity that ranges from coastal plants and marshes to hardwood (mostly Oak) forrest in the north. Some of the swamps and marshes support growths of Cypress trees.
The mammals of Delaware range from mice and rats to squirrels and possum. River otters and Beaver are common along the river while three species of whale are considered ‘native’. White Tail Deer are the largest of the mammals and they are plentiful.
Delaware’s coastal location and plant life lend itself to a great many resident and migratory birds. Canada Geese and many species of ducks abound in Delaware as do terns and gulls.
Reptiles are mostly turtles and frogs, with not very many snakes.
Native freshwater fish include pike, catfish, perch and walleye while the steadily improving water quality of the Delaware River encourage herring, striped bass and shad. All of the fish common to the central Atlantic coast are found off Delaware.
The People
Delaware is predominantly white (all numbers rounded) with 69% of the population while blacks have 21%. Hispanic population is quite low at 8% but the birth numbers suggest that segment of the population is growing.
A mere 5% of the population speaks a language other than English at home with Spanish being the huge proportion of that total.
Delaware has the ninth largest percentage of millionaires in the US at 6.2%.
The Economy
Delaware’s Industrial economy has taken a big hit in the 21st Century with the losses in auto manufacturing, banking, steel, fiber and pharmaceuticals. While unemployment remains fairly low the jobs have been replaced in the lower paying service and retail sectors.
The largest employers by segment include Government, Education, Banking, Chemical (includes pharmaceutical), health care, Farming and Retail. One of the largest Air Force bases on earth is Dover AFB. Among other tasks it is the home of the mortuary for US Armed Forces members. It is that base you see when you see a picture of the flag draped coffins on the tarmac.
Delaware is the home of corporations in the US. The state laws are structured so as to be the most conducive to business in all the states. Consequently Delaware has more corporations chartered there than people. Over one million corporations are registered there include over 50% of the publicly traded companies in the US.
Government
Delaware follows the normal pattern of three part state government consisting of an Executive branch, a Legislative branch and a Judicial Branch.
The Executive branch consists of an elected Governor and Lieutenant Governor and the various appointed heads of departments.
The Legislative branch follows the normal House of Representatives and Senate, with the Senate responsible to confirm the appointed members of the Executive Branch.
The Judicial branch includes not only the normal Supreme Court and Superior Court but also includes a Family Court, a Court of Common Pleas, and a Chancery Court. The latter is specific to corporations and companies and deals mainly with mergers and acquisitions.
Delaware’s three counties carry much of the load of common courts and administration.
Education
Delaware’s K-12 education is centralized under the State Superintendent of Schools, but local school boards do have the power of taxation and some curriculum choices.
All of the teachers in the public school system are union members while none of their counterparts in the private/charter schools are.
Delaware is home to at least 9 certified colleges and universities include the highly regarded (formerly women’s ) Wesley and the University of Delaware.
Transportation
Delaware is served by on (major) Interstate Freeway, US 95 and six Federal Highways, They have an extensive network of State and County roads and are served by a staggering 1,450 bridges. 30% of these bridges were built prior to 1950 which indicates some possible infrastructure problems in the near term. Delaware also has three Ferry routes in the state.
Passenger rail is principally handled in Delaware by Amtrack and it’s famous (or infamous) NE Corridor with stations in Newark and Wilmington. Two major freight lines are common in the state: CSX and Norfolk Southern and there are multiple short line rail companies.
Bus service is primarily handled by the highly regarded DART First State transportation which is described as the best paratransit system in the country. Elderly and poor riders have a door to door option that includes many sources.
Delaware does not have a major airport in the state but is in close proximity to at least 4 major hubs in surrounding states.
Dumb Laws
On Fennwick Island One may not lay down on the beach at night.
In Lewes It is illegal to wear pants that are “firm fitting” around the waist.

This is part of a series on the various states. Florida will be next to examine. I hope you will return.
