Erase the Love
Let's face it, life is not a movie and not every love or relationship has a happy ending. When love ends, what we must do is separate and put distance. The detail is when, despite the separation we still think of the other person. The desire to erase the other from our thoughts and our life can be attractive. So we look for a thousand ways to bury the memories and the ex. It is not unusual to see, after a breakup, people who begin to erase from Facebook, Instagram, all contacts, the person with whom recently had a relationship, it is as if with that gesture, could erase everything that has been lived and the person has never existed.
Let's start this tour with the poem entitled Punto final by Venezuelan writer Alberto Barrera Tyszka. Look at the creative way of telling the other that we have forgotten him:
Look at this point
.
Look at it dry simple solitary
Weak
Like a dead rabbit in the snow
Look at this point
.
See it now
So
Deletion
Like you
In this poem we can see how the lyrical voice uses a point, visible at the beginning and invisible at the end, to talk about the relationship. The dot is the protagonist of the poem, brilliant and genuine, protruding from the leaf; it is perceived as unique, round, just as love was at the beginning. But as the poem progresses, we see how the dot loses visibility, thickness, becomes miniscule until at the end disappears. This image serves the lyrical speaker to make it clear to the other person that he was something in his life, that he existed as the dot we just saw on the sheet, but that no longer exists, is erased.
Another poet who plays with the idea of erasing the person we once loved in a single movement is the Uruguayan Idea Vilariño, in her short poem Adiós:
Here
Far
I'll erase you.
You're erased
Every time I read this poem I can't help but remember a friend who, when she broke up with her boyfriend, asked all her friends not to talk about him again. This was the mechanism she used to erase him from her life. In this poem we can see what we said before and what is happening with many couples: we believe that erasing, eliminating the other person from our life, is to break photos, stop visiting friends in common, not go to the places we used to visit together, in short, we believe that erasing is easy. Although I have never seen anyone return to any bridge to remove the lock they put together while making a promise of love, nor have I heard of trees with erased hearts, I have read of many people trying to remove a tattoo that reminds them of their old love. Some things done in the name of love are indelible.
Regarding the idea of erasing, I bring up the Spanish poet Ángel Guache and his poem titled Mentirosa:
Your love was a lie,
your gesticulating and indecisive kisses
It was a farce.
the varnish glow of your gaze
The sky is no longer blue
I don't pursue your footsteps
I'll erase our history
with an eraser
In this poem, we observe that the lyrical speaker plays with the idea of fiction, of the unreal, of the false. The other person was so false that it could be erased like a story, any invented character. He talks about using a erasure to make everything that has been lived disappear. This expression, can be taken with irony, since it will never be possible to erase anything of that form, reason why the memory will always exist in us; or on the contrary, it is so easy to make disappear the feelings by that other person, that with a simple erase it can be eliminated of our life. Remember that everything passes, except what is important. What is important always remains in our thoughts and a little beyond.
When you end a love relationship, cry, shout, lock yourself in your room, don't eat, don't do many things for a while, if you want. You can delete your ex from your contact list, Facebook, break the cuddly toys you gave and burn the books and records they shared. Keep in mind that everything you do can exorcise each other's memories, but never erase them. After that, tell your friends not to let you dramatize anymore, not to let you talk about the same thing over and over again, because we can all swim in the well for a while, but if you lengthen the drama and stay anchored, you could end up drowning.
Love has those little drawbacks, drawbacks we've all been through at one time or another. Who hasn't had their heart broken? Who hasn't ever broken a heart? Anyway, don't try to erase from your head what's in your heart.
