Ions (Cations and Anions)

I am going to explain topic ions and their types.

ION:

      Ion is an atom or group of atoms having some charge on it .The charge may be positive and negative.So on the basis of charge ion can be classified in to two types:

1) Cation

2) Anion

1) CATION

           An atom or group of atoms showing positive charge on it is called positive ion or cation.Cation/positive ion are formed when electrons are removed from the valance shell of an atom.The number of electron removed from the valence shell is equal to the positive charge.

e.g

 H+,Ca2+ etc are cation

ANION:

               An atom or group of atoms that have some negative charge on it are called anions.Anions are formed when electrons are added in to the valence shell of an atom.The number of electrons added in to the valence shell is equal to the negative charge.

e.g :

Cl-,O2- etc
