I am quite dependent on my sketches. I trust them to guide me toward achieving the proportions and composition I desire in the final piece. Deep down, I am a slave to them because I highly value the time I dedicate to my art, and because that demanding inner voice wants to guarantee that everything I create turns out well, or at least decently well.
For this exercise, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I created a digital portrait of my daughter by applying some alla prima techniques: drawing without a preliminary sketch, starting directly with color, finishing it in a single session, and capturing the form and essence in a quick, spontaneous manner.
The digital environment, obviously, prevents me from experimenting with the "wet-on-wet" technique inherent to oil painting, though I believe this could be somewhat emulated in applications like Adobe Fresco. In my case, I used Procreate.
As I've mentioned, this is a portrait of my daughter. She’s eleven now and I’m amazed of how she’s growing up.
All in all, I must try to do more alla prima portraits frequently. It is a fun and liberating exercise, though in the digital medium, the temptation to undo every "mistake" is always lurking. I believe that, in reality, there are no mistakes in this technique; only brushstrokes that build, layer by layer, the form and life of what we paint.

Soy bastante dependiente de mis bocetos. Confío en que me guiarán para lograr las proporciones y la composición que deseo en el resultado final. En el fondo, soy esclava de ellos porque valoro mucho el tiempo que le dedico al arte, y porque esa voz exigente en mi interior quiere garantizar que todo lo que haga termine bien, o al menos, decentemente bien.
Para este ejercicio, quise salir de mi zona de confort. Hice un retrato digital de mi hija aplicando algunas técnicas de alla prima: dibujar sin boceto previo, comenzar directamente con el color, terminarlo en una sola sesión y capturar la forma y la esencia de manera rápida y espontánea.
El entorno digital, obviamente, me impide experimentar con la técnica de «húmedo sobre húmedo» propia de la pintura al óleo, aunque creo que esto podría emularse un poco en aplicaciones como Adobe Fresco. En mi caso, utilicé Procreate.
Como ya les he mencionado, este es un retrato de mi hija.
En definitiva, debo intentar hacer más retratos alla prima con frecuencia. Es un ejercicio divertido y liberador, aunque en el medio digital siempre acecha la tentación de deshacer cada «error». Creo que, en realidad, en esta técnica no hay errores; solo pinceladas que construyen, capa a capa, la forma y la vida de lo que pintamos.
