I had a good friend who said that patience was only for those in a hurry to live. Persistence, on the other hand, was for those who truly knew how to wait, even if the results weren't what they hoped for. That's why, when they told her she would never walk again, she calmly said, "You insist, doctor, on your diagnosis, and I will insist on my legs. All I can do is persist." And so, every day, she dragged herself to her chair without help, refusing assistance, trying again and again. With time, she was able to progress more and more, not as before, but always with difficulties and stumbles. She walked, supported by a makeshift handrail they had placed between the bed and the window frame.
She never walked again, but she tried, again and again. The doctors always told her it was impossible, but she didn't give up. Until the day before she died, barely able to, she tried to get up and walk. I always remember her for that, for her insistence on the impossible, for her failed attempts to walk that became her motivation to keep living, until she extracted all her strength from her body.

Tenía una buena amiga que decía que la paciencia era solo para aquellos que tienen prisa en vivir. La insistencia en cambio era para los que de verdad sabían esperar a pesar de que los resultados no fueran los esperados. Por eso cuando le dijeron que no volvería a caminar, ella con expresión de serenidad solo dijo:
-Insiste doctor, usted en su diagnóstico, que yo voy a insistir con mis piernas, lo único que me queda es insistir
Y así se arrastraba cada día hasta su silla sin ayuda, no permitía la ayuda, lo intentaba una y otra vez. Con el tiempo pudo más y más avanzar no como antes, si no siempre llena de dificultades y tropiezos, pero caminaba apoyada en un barandal improvisado que posicionaron de la cama al marco de la ventana.
Nunca volvió a caminar, pero sí lo intentó, una y otra vez, los médicos le decían siempre que era imposible, pero ella no se venció, hasta el día antes de su muerte, sin apenas poder intentó levantarse y caminar. Siempre la recuerdo por eso, por su insistencia en lo imposible, por sus intentos fallidos de caminar que se convirtieron en su motivación de seguir viviendo, hasta que extrajo de su cuerpo todas sus fuerzas.
