BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:15 P.M.) - The Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament and leader of the Amal Movement, Nabih Berri, refused to meet with two U.N. officials at his residency in 'Ayn Al-Tineh, Al-Joumhouria reported on Friday.
Claiming "disgusting behavior", the veteran politician refused to take part in any meeting with the UN Speciail Coordinator for Lebanon, Bernell Cardel, and former UNIFIL commander, Michael Beary.
“I refused to receive her at Ain el-Tineh because she crossed the lines. Not only did she harm Lebanon, but she also harmed the United Nations’ role,” Berri told Al-Joumhouria.
Berri slammed Cardel over their last meeting in April, claiming that "she is in accord with the Israeli policy at the expense of our rights and our borders. I brought to her attention that she has made a commitment to continue with the policy of her predecessor Sigrid Kaag, but she denied.”
"She violated the diplomatic norms and objective facts when she visited Lebanese personalities and held me responsible for disrupting the resolution of the border dispute with the Israeli occupation entity.”
“I was aware of the aggressive orientation she has against me," he added on Cardel.
In regards to Beary, the Amal Movement leader refused to meet with him over the former's participation in Israel's independence day.“Not only did Beary do that, but he also tweeted congratulating Israel on this occasion, ignoring the fact that he is the UNIFIL commander in Lebanon and his role requires different behavior and respect for his position and the feelings of the Lebanese who have paid great price for the aggression of the Israeli occupation and its wars,” he concluded.
Both Beary and Cardel met with other high ranking Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Saad Hariri.Sources: Naharnet, Al-Joumhouria
