🐜 Camponotus nicobarensis – Week 4 Update | First Signs of a Future Move?
The colony is still living inside the test tube, but their behavior is slowly starting to change.
📈 Current status
The colony is still developing slowly, but steadily.
- Queen: 1
- Workers: 6
- Brood: still present, with visible larval development
No major changes are visible yet, but overall the colony seems more active than a few weeks ago.
🔍 More activity outside the test tube
Over the last few days, I’ve noticed that workers are:
- spending more time outside the test tube
- staying in the arena for longer periods
- exploring the surroundings more actively
Their time outside the nest now seems noticeably longer compared to earlier weeks.
🗑️ First waste management behavior
I was also able to observe the colony transporting waste out of the test tube for the first time.
At the moment, the waste is simply being placed directly in front of the entrance.
Even though this is still a very simple form of organization, it shows that the colony is beginning to:
- keep the nest area cleaner
- create the first structures outside the nest
🏠 Will they move soon?
The prepared nest is still not being used.
However, I get the feeling that the ants are slowly starting to:
- become more aware of their surroundings
- feel safer outside the test tube
I still give them complete freedom of choice and simply observe how their behavior develops.
Small Camponotus colonies often seem to take a lot of time before accepting a new nest.
🍯 Feeding
Food intake is still relatively low, but consistent.
Sugar sources as well as small protein sources are accepted.
For a colony of this size, everything still seems completely normal.
🧠 Impression
Even though development is still slow, I find these small behavioral changes especially interesting.
The visible larval development and the increasing activity outside the test tube feel like the first real signs of progress.
🔎 Outlook
For the next update, I’ll especially keep an eye on:
- further activity outside the test tube
- brood development
- possible first signs of a future move
