Mythical Creatures are quite common in the Philippines especially if you are living in rural areas. Since I was a child, I keep on hearing about different creatures living in the other dimension you even see stories being featured in the television. This is my entry for
’s Tell Me About Philippines: Mythical Creatures contest. We all have different beliefs and I respect those who do not believe any of it. Nonetheless, I wanna share to you my family's story.
Sometime in 1970’s
Inday, a teenager living in a rural area in Mindanao, where at that time, human neighborhood was far from each other. Tall grasses stood as her and her sibling’s playground and huge trees were their hiding place. But she is not an ordinary girl because she can see beyond normal things, a third-eyed person, they said.
One afternoon, when she was gathering for some woods beneath the big Narra tree, an exceptionally beautiful as white as a porcelain lady appeared. She was wearing a very beautiful dress that made her beauty stood even more.
“What is your name?” the lady said.
“Inday, is my name. How about yours?” she replied.
The lady didn’t tell Inday her name but told her instead, “I want to befriend you. I can make you rich. I will give you my brother and you can enslave him. Just be my friend and come with me.”
Inday, knowing that she wasn’t talking to a human, she answered “No. We cannot be friends as you are not a human.” After that, Inday left the lady and went home hurriedly.
Every time, Inday would come to take some woods in the same area where she met the porcelain lady, the latter would always show up, and always asked her to come with her. But Inday as determined as she was, rejection always came out from her mouth. And the lady won’t speak every time Inday rejects her until one drizzling afternoon.
“If you will not come with me, I will take your first-born daughter.” The lady said angrily and disappeared in front of her.
And that’s how we lost our oldest sister, Manuela. She was a healthy baby when she was born, and she died less than a month after she was born with no health issues.
1st November 1998, I was just a mere 6 years old child when we went to the cemetery. We were cleaning a very tiny tomb with the name of my sister written. There were no other words written on her tomb not even a year because she was taken so early. I asked my Mom what happened to my “Ate Manuela” why she died. And that was the first time I heard about the story.
My mother always answers us about this story of how the lady threatened her to take her first born daughter. My mother believed that the Engkantada, a mythical creature, had taken my oldest sister. My mother always warns us to know the difference if you are still talking to a human or not.
The place where Inday, my mother, saw the Engkantada was the place where our house was built. And one evening, when me and my older sister were left at home with no other company, we saw a lady wearing a white beautiful dress just outside our window. Her beauty was intricating, yet we can’t seem to see clearly her face but all we knew was that, she’s very beautiful. With an unbelievably beautiful tempting voice, she spoke to my older sister.
“Lovely, come with me. I’ll give you a lot of dresses.”
Me and my sister immediately close our wooden window and scarily hid under our bed. Afraid for the floating lady to come back. Gladly, up to this present day, the lady never came back and that made us glad especially my sister whom the lady had called.
And that’s how, we start believing the story of our mother about the Engkantada who took my Ate Manuela away.
