A couple of years ago, no one knew about this breathtaking waterfall that looked like a bride in a wedding dress with a full skirt, glancing over her shoulder, with the veil gracefully draping over her upper body.
The waterfall gets its name from its distinctive shape, which looks like a bride wearing a wedding dress and veil. The 50-meter high natural marvel cascades down the cliffside in a way that magically creates the image of a person standing tall against the dark rock.
Despite its awe-inspiring loveliness, the waterfall had been hidden away near the village of Vigaspampa in the province of Celendín, in the Cajamarca region, according to local reports.
It was not until 2017 that a video by human rights professor Gustavo Vela posted on Twitter made this marvel of nature widely known and renowned around the world.
In addition to its natural beauty, La Cascada de la Novia is also surrounded by local legends and customs. As the story goes, the waterfall was created when a young couple fell madly in love, but their families disapproved of the relationship. In a show of defiance, the pair chose to flee, but in the process of trying to escape, both tragically died in a ravine on the mountain, where the waterfall can still be seen today.
It is said that from the day of the tragedy, the water flows and speaks in an unknown language, depicting the image of the bride in her wedding dress and veil, ready to tie the knot.

The ravine in question is known as the Pachachaca tunnel – a deep natural formation, with some traces of stalactites. From the small entrance, you can make your way along two bends and find yourself inside a 100-feet (30-meter) long underground cavern, leading to the veil of the bride. The most daring would call it “the tunnel of the bride.”
La Cascada de la Novia is a truly breathtaking sight, and absolutely a must-visit spot for anyone travelling to Peru. If you make your way there between December and May, when the water is at its fullest, this magical waterfall is certain to captivate you.
