Gurus appear when you least expect them.
Imagine this. It's about 100F outside, the aircon in my truck is broken, and we are beginning the process of moving our business with my truck fully loaded. We are late to sign the paperwork. Miss 13 is enjoying sharing her music with me pretty loudly, alternating with songs from her recently-rediscovered 7-year-old Barbie musicals and Korean rap. I'm not sure my smile is gonna last much longer. I have not yet had coffee. Suddenly I realize I left my wallet on the bench in the kitchen, so I do the U-turn to drive back to get it and we hit snarled traffic. Damn, it's hot. I wait, with sweat trickling ever so slowly down my lower back. The nauseating Disney 'thing' grates. Suddenly I feel a wave of I don't think I am strong enough to do any of this! coming on like a tsunami, and so I deliberately distract myself by looking out the window.
At first all I can see is the garbage carelessly left out font of the little local motorbike repair shop. I feel my irritation rising some more. I breathe, and look again. And then I SEE it.
The little banana tree struggling to stay upright, with hardly any decent soil and very little water other than the odd bucket of putrid cleaning water tossed carelessly now and then, is BEARING FRUIT. Not one but TWO bunches of green bananas, audaciously hanging there. Daring to begin their ripening without a second glance at their humble circumstance.
It was then I heard the Banana Guru whisper.
"Just bear your fruit, without worrying."
"Your fruit will feed many people, even if you didn't grow as straight as some others".
"The rains will come soon."
"Look at the big tree who is sheltering you so courageously."
"The big tree is happy to share his water with you."
"The tree spirits love that you are here and the monks wait here for their blessings in the morning."
"Next week, your big leaves will wrap a food offering for a sick grandma"
"When Loy Krathong comes, they will cut you with gratitude to honour the River Goddess, and you will smile."
"Mama!!" The traffic had started to inch forward, I threw the truck back into gear and I smiled at Miss 13. She started singing her fav kpop BTS song, "Serendipty", and we both smiled. Moments of perfection and clarity.
My Thai life is pretty damn fine. Grateful
