Hello, fellow Steemians! This year I almost forgot what day is today, but thanks to social media - I have remembered and luckily for me I had some time to spend and sketchbook in my backpack along with my ballpoint pen (no surprises :)
I don't recall drawing Obi Wan in recent years so why not to honor him today?
I started with very light lines to nail down the most important marks, thinking mostly about propotions, gesture and core shadow. Since I was going to keep bright rim light on his side the concern was to make no mark there at all in the beginning
I used to start with eyes before but now I usually start to build the portrait sketch from the nose - normally there are darkest darks, all midtones and brightest highlight
In stages like this I tend to ask myselft - What the f_k with the likeness? It's fading out, disappearing. Seemingly good time for panic and frustration but if I keep in mind my initial understanding of big shapes - everything will be OK, it will come back since I will get rid of white and make my values right.
The most important here is to maintain the planes and overall structure, core shadow is essential
Now it is time to work into the areas of halftones in light - it can be dangerous so I force myself to slow down, draw lines as light as possible and keep tip of the pen clean
In this stage the drawing is almost done, I fill the gaps, carefully build some planes in the lights, keep myself from messing it up on the finish line and it's done! It took 1 hour approximately, I used my pocketsized sketchbook and 0.5mm ballpoint pen.
Hope you liked it and May the 4th be with you!!
