Pride day is coming, the march in my city is near and I am very anxious and happy, hoping to have a very nice day. The truth is that, in honor of LGBTIQ+ pride month, I decided to make another recommendation of a queer series, this time aimed at a younger audience than my previous recommendation, Pose. Without further ado, let's talk about Heartstopper and why you should watch it.

Se acerca el día del orgullo, está cerca la marcha que harán en mi ciudad y estoy muy ansioso y contento, con esperanzas de tener un muy bonito día. Lo cierto es que, en honor al mes del orgullo LGBTIQ+, decidí hacer otra recomendación de una serie queer, en esta ocasión dirigida a un público más juvenil que mi anterior recomendación, Pose. Sin más que añadir, hablemos de Heartstopper y por qué deben verla.
Heartstopper, premiering in 2022, is a British series that serves as a television adaptation of Alice Oseman's graphic novel. Belonging to the genres Drama, Romance and Teen, Heartstopper shows us the simple story of two boys who fall in love little by little, their friends and the reaction of everyone around them, who support them and who are against them.
I thought it was important to make this recommendation because I feel that, especially in teenage series, there are quite high expectations that are almost impossible for young people, especially in terms of beauty standards, adventures and freedom. In Heartstopper we see young people, we see people that teenagers can easily identify with. And not only that, but it has all kinds of representation for the LGBTQ+ community, because it has a varied cast, and diverse characters, a good representation for trans youth, lesbians, gays and bisexuals who are beginning to enter the adult world and self-discovery.
Heartstopper, estrenada en el 2022, es una serie británica que sirve como adaptación televisiva de la novela gráfica de Alice Oseman. Perteneciente a los géneros Drama, Romance y Adolescente, Heartstopper nos muestra la simple historia de dos chicos que se enamoran poco a poco, de sus amigos y de la reacción de todos a su alrededor, quienes los apoyan y quienes se ponen en contra.
Me pareció importante hacer esta recomendación porque siento que, en especial en series adolescentes, hay unas expectativas bastante marcadas que son casi imposibles para jóvenes, en especial en cuanto a cánones de belleza, a aventuras y libertad. En Heartstopper vemos jóvenes, vemos personas con las cuales los adolescentes se identifican fácilmente. Y no solo eso, pero tiene todo tipo de representación para la comunidad LGBTQ+, pues cuenta con un cast variado, y personajes diversos, una buena representación para la juventud trans, las lesbianas, gays y bisexuales que empiezan a adentrarse al mundo adulto y el autodescubrimiento.
The series revolves around two boys, Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson. Charlie, played by young Joe Locke, is a somewhat introverted boy, with a small group of friends and openly gay, who gradually falls in love with his classmate, Nick (Kit Connor), the typical popular boy that everyone wants to hang out with, sporty and charming.
I find it interesting how they integrate the secondary characters into the plot, and give them important stories, especially Elle, played by Yasmin Finney, the Trans girl who is transferred for an all-girls school, we see a deep development in terms of everyone's acceptance with her identity and how she herself gradually feels more confident. She also strikes up a friendship throughout the plot with Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), a pair of lesbian girls who become involved until they are all friends.
La serie se desenvuelve alrededor de dos chicos, Charlie Spring y Nick Nelson. Charlie, interpretado por el joven Joe Locke, es un chico algo introvertido, con un grupo reducido de amigos y abiertamente gay, quien poco a poco se va enamorando de su compañero de clases, Nick (Kit Connor), el típico chico popular con el que todos quieren salir y juntarse, deportista y encantador.
Me parece interesante cómo integran a los personajes secundarios en la trama, y le dan historias importantes, en especial a Elle, interpretada por Yasmin Finney, la chica Trans que es transferida para una escuela de solo chicas, vemos un desarrollo profundo en cuanto a la aceptación de todos con su identidad y cómo ella misma se siente poco a poco más segura. También entabla a lo largo de la trama una amistad con Tara (Corinna Brown) y Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), una pareja de chicas lesbianas que se van involucrando hasta que todos son amigos.
One of the elements that made me love this series is its lightness, something uncommon in LGBTQ+ series and movies. It's nice to see a teen series where the problems are dating, dating jitters, sweaty palms and finally the main characters giving each other a pecker kiss that makes you gasp with excitement. It's not sex, it's not drugs and glamour, it's teenagers looking for acceptance from their peers, to present their evaluations and to fall in love for the first time.
Something else I would like to mention about the series that makes me praise it, is its casting, because they used a fairly young cast to play teenagers, something that we currently see very little, because in series like Elite and Euphoria they usually use a more adult cast to play schoolchildren and teenagers. For example, when the series premiered, Kit Connor and Joe Locke were 18 years old, and Yasmin Finney was 19 years old. I think it's a unique touch and one that we see repeated in Young Royals. It's refreshing to see young people playing young people, and it gives a touch of realism and innocence that is perfect for the teenage plot of the series. And for a final touch, it features performances by Olivia Colman, who plays Nick Nelson's mother.
Uno de los elementos que me hizo amar esta serie es su ligereza, algo poco común en series y películas LGBTQ+. Es bonito ver una serie adolescente donde los problemas sean las citas, los nervios por salir con alguien, las manos sudorosas y que por fin los protagonistas se den un besito de pico que te haga pegar un grito de emoción. No es sexo, no es drogas y glamour, son adolescentes en busca de aceptación de sus compañeros, de presentar sus evaluaciones y de enamorarse por primera vez.
Algo más que me gustaría mencionar respecto a la serie que me hace elogiarla, es su casting, pues usaron un cast bastante joven para interpretar adolescentes, algo que actualmente vemos muy poco, pues en series cómo Élite y Euphoria suelen usar un cast más adulto para interpretar a colegiales y adolescentes. Por ejemplo, al momento de estreno de la serie, Kit Connor y Joe Locke tenían 18 años de edad, y Yasmin Finney 19 añitos. Me parece un toque único y que vemos que se repite en Young Royals. Es refrescante ver a jóvenes interpretar jóvenes, y le da el toque de realismo e inocencia que quedan perfectos con la trama adolescente de la serie. Y para toque final, cuenta con actuaciones como la de Olivia Colman, quien interpreta a la mamá de Nick Nelson.
Also, I'm not the only one who thinks the series is good and worthwhile, as it had universal acclaim from professional critics, giving it a score of 85 / 100 on average, based on 9 reviews, and also a score of 8.1 given by Metacritic users.
From my point of view, I could give the series a solid 9 / 10, as I enjoyed it to the hilt, it made me laugh, cry, scream with excitement and fervently wish I had had a cute and warm romance in my teenage years. Fun fact, there hasn't been a single person I know who has watched it and told me it was the least bit bad or boring, it's pure entertainment, in the form of pastel colors and little animations that make this, the series, a light and fun experience.
Además, no soy el único que piensa que la serie es buena y valiosa, pues tuvo una aclamación universal por parte de críticos profesionales, otorgándole un puntaje de 85 / 100 en promedio, en base a 9 críticas, y además un puntaje de 8.1 otorgado por usuarios de Metacritic.
Desde mi punto de vista, podría otorgarle a la serie un sólido 9 / 10, pues la disfruté a más no poder, me hizo reír, llorar, gritar de emoción y desear de forma ferviente haber tenido un romance lindo y cálido en mis años de adolescencia. Como dato curioso, no ha habido una sola persona que yo conozca que la haya visto y me diga que sea mínimamente mala o aburrida, es entretenimiento puro, en forma de colores pasteles y pequeñas animaciones que hacen de esta, la serie, una experiencia ligera y divertida.
In conclusion, I decided to recommend this series because it is a small window to experiences that queer teens can live when they are just growing up and discovering themselves, it is a glimpse into the simpler life of young people, with more trivial problems, more relaxed than other types of adventures to which we are accustomed. It's a nice representation for LGBTQ+ youth, and it's a series that broke barriers in terms of prejudice, because yes there can be family content that focuses on gay stories.
If you want to see colorful images, fun teen romances, an explosion of cute colors and animated effects, let me tell you that this is the right series for you. Heartstopper will be a nice experience in general measure, perfect to marathon on a Sunday with your family. And if you're left wanting more, you can watch Young Royals.
I hope you enjoyed my recommendation; it was nice to talk a little bit about this series, so much so that I feel like repeating it before the premiere of its second season, even reading the graphic novels. Do not forget that the representation on the big and small screen is necessary, and it seems to me that this is a good month to make this kind of recommendations. En conclusión, decidí recomendar esta serie porque es una pequeña ventana a experiencias que pueden vivir adolescentes queer cuando apenas van creciendo y descubriéndose, es un vistazo a la vida más sencilla de los jóvenes, con problemas más triviales, más relajados que otro tipo de aventuras a las que estamos acostumbrados. Es una linda representación para los jóvenes LGBTQ+, y es una serie que rompió barreras en cuanto a prejuicios, porque sí puede existir contenido familiar que se centre en historias gays.
Si quieren ver imágenes coloridas, romances adolescentes divertidos, una explosión de lindos colores y efectos animados, déjenme decirles que esta es la serie correcta para ustedes. Heartstopper será una experiencia bonita en medida general, perfecta para maratonear en domingo junto a tu familia. Y si quedas con ganas de más, puedes ver Young Royals.
Espero que hayan disfrutado de mi recomendación, fue lindo hablar un poco de esta serie, tanto así que siento ganas de repetirla antes del estreno de su segunda temporada, incluso leer las novelas gráficas. No olviden que la representación en la pantalla grande y chica es necesaria, y me parece que este es un buen mes para hacer este tipo de recomendaciones.
