Festival of Lamps (Karthikai Deepam)
Festival of Lamps (Karthikai Deepam) is one of the oldest festivals being celebrated by Tamil people which dates back to the Sangam Age (200 B.C. - 300 A.D.). This occurs on the full moon day when the moon is in conjunction with the constellation Pleiades (Karthigai).
The spirit of Karthigai Deepam festival is lighting as many oil lamps as possible.
While the lighted lamp is important for all Hindu rituals and festivals, it is indispensable for Karthigai. The lighted lamp is considered an auspicious symbol. It is believed to ward off evil forces and usher in prosperity and joy.
That day, the temples and homes look heavenly with lamps everywhere and arranged in artistic ways to create religious symbols and interesting patterns.
Technology and Science have progressed a lot but the rituals and beliefs will keep mankind involved in every way.
