Amsterdam is a strange city. It's compact, full of people (and bikes), scooter riders don't wear helmets, trams run side by side with pedestrians, cars and of course, bikes. But somehow it works. Maybe the picture below shows what I am talking about.
アムステルダムはどこか変わった街です。コンパクトな街は人（と自転車）でいっぱいだし、スクーターに乗っている人はノーヘルだし、トラムも歩行者や車、そして自転車と隣り合わせで走っていますが、なぜか下の写真のように上手く機能しています。

Despite the organised mess, even in the city centre, you don't feel the "rush" compared to other big cities like Tokyo, London, Paris. I've wondered why and came to the conclusion that maybe it's how Dutch people communicate, which of course has got something to do with the value they consider important.
そんな秩序だった混沌から成る街にもかかわらず、中心部でも東京やロンドン、パリのような急かされているような気はしません。その理由を考えていた僕は、オランダ人のコミュニケーションのあり方（そして彼らが大切にする価値観）に関係があるのではないかという結論に至りました。
Being a Japanese native, I feel the Dutch way of communication is quite low-context and there's respect towards individuals. It's close to the concept of "live and let live." Maybe it's a generalisation and there should be people who prioritise the harmony as a group but it's just how I feel based on my experience.
日本で生まれ育った身として、オランダ人のコミュニケーションはローコンテクストだなと思うし、そこからは個人へのリスペクトがうかがえます。「Live and let live（それぞれの生き方を尊重する）」というコンセプトに近いかもしれません（もちろんこれは僕自身の経験に基づいた考えなので、グループを重視する人もいるでしょう）。
So even in the capital city of a country, during summer time, you see people half naked enjoying the sun like the guy below. It was a small culture shock for me at first but hey, you can only enjoy it for a few month in a year so why not?
だからか一国の首都にも関わらず、夏になると上半身裸で日光浴を楽しんでいる人をよく見かけます。最初は結構カルチャーショックでしたが、生活するうちにオランダの気候を考えるとまぁそれもアリだなと思えるようになりました。
