The smell of smoke filled the house just after midnight. At first, kayode thought he was dreaming, but then he heard loud screams from outside his room.
“Fire! Fire!”
He jumped out of the bathroom with panic. Water still dripped from his body as the orange glow of flames reflected through the bathroom window. His heart pounded heavily with fear. Without thinking, he grabbed the nearest towel and wrapped it around his waist before rushing outside.
Neighbors were already gathering near the gate. Some carried buckets of water while others shouted for help. Kayode stood there still in fear, barefoot and soaked, staring at the thick smoke rising from the kitchen window.
A little boy pointed at him and whispered loudly, “Is he even wearing clothes?”
The people nearby turned to look. Kayode suddenly realized he was standing in public with only a small towel covering him. Embarrassment mixed with fear as he hold the towel tightly, praying it would not fall of his tiny waist.
Meanwhile, the fire continued to spread. His close by neighbors was able to put out the fire quickly before it could spread into the whole house. Kayode watched helplessly, his body shaking, not knowing whether he was more afraid of losing the house or losing the towel around his waist.
