"Mezban" "মেজবান"
is a traditional ceremony in Chittagong region. People arrange it after the death of a common man or a child name ceremony or enter a new home or baby girls ears pier or their own success etc.
The origins of Mezban:
The word "Mezban" comes from the Persian word meaning "Controller". The person arrange the ceremony called 'Mezban' and attending them by heartiness called "Mezbani".
Mezban is called "Mezzan" in the regional language of Chittagong. Mezban may called in any occasion. The exact date of the origin of Mezban is unknown. This practice has long been practiced in Chittagong region.
Mezbani meal:
The banquet mainly consists of white rice, beef, cow leg (which is called "নলা কাঁজি") and pulse in liquid form. Generally three to four curry are served with white rice.
The Specialities of Mezban cousin are:
Sour meat cooked with pepper and spices. A peeled pulse is cooked called "ঘুনা ডাল". Meat are also cooked with pulse. Meat fat and bones mixed with it. Extra attention is Cow's leg along cooked with verities of spices.
Invitation:
The invitation for the meal is open to all. Earlier in the days a Rich man invite all the area people one day before Mezban. Mezban symbolizes the social status of Chittagong.
Usually nobody in Chittagong can refrain themselves from eating Mezban. Mezbani chefs are also local people. They use spices specially chilli-turmeric powder in special areas of Chittagong.
