There’s a profound scripture verse that gets me thinking all the time whenever I read it. It’s the scripture that says that he that rules over his own spirit is stronger than he that takes a city.
Do you know the amount of energy, strength and strategy it would take for someone to take a city in the case of war, conquering a whole city is no easy feat yet this scripture verse ascribes more honour to the person who is a lot to rule his spirit than the one who takes a city.
That is to show us how important the subject of self control is. A lot of persons have issues with self control and we end up getting into trouble. The same goes for those who are hot tempered. Hot temperedness is the inability for one to control his temper, feeling, emotions and reactions in the face of a possible provocation.
Hot temperedness to me actually is not a bad thing but the negative part of it is when the person is not able to control the emotions and there do very drastic or awkward things because they are provoked.
Each of us at almost every point in time gets one form of provocations or the other. Provocation is a part of our everyday life but the difference is in how it’s handled. There are people who easily get angry but their anger does down as easily as it comes.
There are those who get angry and once they say their minds they are fine. There are those who get angry and shout and after shouting, it ends there. There are those who get angry but do not even express their anger. They just let it slide.
The one that is dangerous and should be avoided or requires immediate actions are those ones that get physical when they get angry. Some person would hit you with anything they see handy just to get even. They beat, slap and fight when provoked.
Those type is the type of temper that’s dangerous and have done more harm. I have heard stories of people who have killed others because they couldn’t control their temper.
A senior colleague of mine told a story about a woman that was arrested and sent to jail for killing her husband. On her way to jail she kept saying “ if I knew I would have kept my head like a goat.”
What happened? She was having an argument with her husband and he told her “ look at your head like that of a goat”. She got angry that her husband said that her head is like a goat and she took pestle and hit him on the head and he died.
Now she was sentenced to jail because of hot temperedness. The thing about been hot tempered without control is that the victim will always live in regrets. Because you would have done a lot of mean things just to justify your anger and you will alter regret all those things.
People who have seen that they are prone to hot temperedness, should seek for therapy and help and avoid acting immediately on impulse when they are provoked. Most time when we are provoked, our first impulse would always be wrong.
So it’s okay to let the steam cook down a little until we are able to make reasonable judgments.
