There is an alternative to the official opinion that St. Petersburg was rebuilt from ruins on the banks of the Neva delta. In 1703, Peter 1 was not at the foundation of the city. There is a record that at that time he was in the Oreshek fortress. It is not far from the Ladoga Sea (although this body of water is now called a lake). But these are just someone's versions. It is customary at school to study the official version of the story.
Whatever it really is, but one thing for me is indisputable. The places where we will walk this Wednesday are the oldest in this city according to any of the versions. It will be several streets of the Petrograd side. About 40 years ago I lived in this area on Kronverkskaya Street. A lot of water has flowed from the Neva since then.

Это будет несколько улочек Петроградской стороны. Примерно 40 лет назад я жил в этом районе на улице Кронверкской. Много воды утекло в Неве с тех пор.
I marked the approximate place of our walk with a rectangle on the modern map of the city. On the old map, this place has not yet been excavated, like the entire Vasilievsky Island. But the last one clearly shows the lines of the former canals.

The sitnaya market and its surroundings are unlikely to be part of official tourist routes. For this there is Nevsky Prospect and the central part of the city on the other side of the Neva.

This part of the old city can be compared to the sleeping area of the past centuries. Residential and apartment buildings, capital buildings with narrow streets and thick walls.

It seems that developers have been saving space at all times or land was too expensive. At the same time, there was not so much transport on the streets, and there was enough space for a horse-drawn carriage or a few pedestrians.

It cannot be said that many houses have survived here, which may have been excavated. I think that a lot was destroyed and rebuilt on old foundations. Something was being rebuilt completely. The construction of new houses continues now. When you see a blank wall without a single-window ... what does that indicate? I will not give ready-made answers, I will only say that there are a lot of such houses in the old part of the city.
Нельзя сказать, что здесь сохранилось много домов, которые возможно раскапывали. Думаю, что много было разрушено и наново отстраивалось на старых фундаментах. Что-то строилось полностью заново. Стройка новых домов продолжается и сейчас. Когда вы видите глухую стену без единого окна...о чём это свидетельствует? Я не буду давать готовых ответов, скажу только, что в старой части города таких домов достаточно много.
It is a shame that most of the courtyards are closed to outsiders. I would love to have a look at each of them. And of course, I would have a camera with me.

Очень жаль, что большинство дворов закрыто для посторонних. Я бы с удовольствием заглянул в каждый из них. И конечно, с собой у меня была бы камера.
