I can't remember who said it, but I recall reading a phrase somewhere suggesting that by immersing ourselves in nature, truly seeing it, we can understand ourselves better; I'm not sure if it's true for everyone but I certainly feel happier and more in tune and centred when I spend time with nature so I believe the statement to be true. I wish I could remember who wrote the phrase I refer to as the words were more eloquent than my own, but the gist of the words are meaningful nonetheless; nature is meaningful too, it surrounds us, nurtures us and heals us.
It's difficult to define just why nature makes me feel so together, I've tried in the past but always come up short, then at other times I find myself thinking that it doesn't matter why it has that power over me, the only thing that matters is that is makes me feel that way.

The way I feel when at the lake, the coast, in the woods or mountains, even my own home where I tend my garden lovingly, is something special to me and I feel at peace, closer to the planet and a part of it in a very small way; I think that's probably what understand ourselves better means so whomever wrote those words is, I think someone just like me who loves, respects and values nature, as we all should.
