Everyone knows that sugar and sugar-containing products are addictive. Sugar, namely glucose for our body – a source of energy, which is why we are sensitive to sweet.
After all, where the sweetness - there should be energy. It turns out that evolutionarily people are predisposed to sweets.
But how strong is our dependence on sweets?
Research scientists prove that sugar has an effect on our brain, similar to the action of cocaine – activated the same areas of the brain that react to cocaine use.
Refined sugar and opioid drugs cause the same response from the brain reward system – dopamine and other neuropeptides are released. We get used to and our dose increases – so is the dependence on drugs and sugar.
Indirectly, the similarity between dependence on sugar and cocaine can be seen by the example of the abolition of the use of both substances.
Experiments on rats have shown that their dependence on sugar exceeded even cocaine dependence – 94% of rats preferred sugar to cocaine when choosing.
When a person refuses sugar, he begins a real drug withdrawal – depression, behavioral disorders, irritability, sudden mood changes, etc.
But is it possible to compare the effects of sugar and cocaine, because cocaine is a drug? Yes, because sugar also kills us: consuming sweet, often we can not stop at the extent that the body needs for energy. We eat too much sweet. This leads to problems with teeth, diabetes, heart disease and blood vessels.
The modern way of nutrition constantly stimulates us with sugar in different forms. We get super pleasure from sweets, because in previous periods of human life sweet was not enough, and our receptors are configured to distinguish the sweet taste even in the smallest concentrations.
But sugar suppresses our mechanisms of self-control, and now we eat the next piece of cake and drink again Coca-Cola! And our dependence is growing.
If you ever watched alcoholic or narcotic withdrawal, then you know that this addiction. The same thing will happen to you if you cancel the sweet in the diet. Life will become dreary and meaningless.
What is important is that the constant use of sweets leads to changes in the brain similar changes when taking drugs like morphine, nicotine and cocaine. Also, excessive love of sweets stimulates the tendency to alcohol.
Over time, there is an adaptation to the sweet and you need more and more sweet to get back to the original pleasure – all as with drugs! This is a vicious circle, because the more the dose, the less sensitive we become to sugar, and all this is repeated.
For clarity, you can watch this short informative TED video about how sugar affects us:
Today I leave you to think about this information and decide for yourself whether you need as much sugar as you eat (because it is not only in cakes and soda, but also in tomato paste, yogurt, etc.).
And do you want to do something for your health to get rid of this addiction, because dependence on sweets is the same dependence as on alcohol, drugs and nicotine. It's addiction that leads to deceases and death.
