The Temple of Literature in Hanoi—Is It Worth It?

I’ve told you about a few places: the Mekong River, Hoi An, the incense village, Ba Na Hills, and the rice fields, but the truth is, there’s so much more about my trip to Vietnam that I haven’t shared with you.

That country, which I arrived in without even planning to go there, became not only my refuge but also an inspiration throughout the nearly month I spent there.

Les he contado sobre algunos lugares: El Mekong, Hoi An, el pueblo del incienso, Ba Na Hills, los Campos de Arroz, pero lo cierto es que hay mucho más de mi viaje a Vietnam que no les he contado.

Aquel país al que llegué sin siquiera tenerlo en mis planes, se convirtió no solamente en mi refugio, sino también en una inspiración a lo largo de el casi mes que estuve allí.

This time I’ll tell you about the Temple of Literature, a site located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and amidst all the hustle and bustle of this city, this temple ultimately becomes a haven of silence and peace.

En esta ocasión les hablaré del Templo de la Literatura, un sitio que se encuentra en Hanoi, la capital de Vietnam, y que dentro de todo este bullicio que hay en esta ciudad, al final este templo se convierte en un remanso de silencio y paz.

It turns out that millions of students have passed through here since the 11th century, when it was built. According to accounts, the standards were so high that many people were unable to pass the exams administered there.

It was Vietnam’s first university, and this is consistent with the excellence the site offered and demanded.

Resulta que por aquí han pasado millones de estudiantes desde el siglo XI, que fue cuando se construyó. Según comentan, su exigencia era tal, que incluso mucha gente no era capaz de superar las pruebas que allí se efectuaban.

Fue la primera universidad de Vietnam, y esto es coherente con la excelencia que este sitio ofrecía y demandaba.

Currently, there is an admission fee, but it’s not exorbitant, and I highly recommend visiting it, since Hanoi is a rather noisy and chaotic city, but this spot offers a chance to relax and see another side of Vietnamese culture and energy.

Actualmente es un lugar de pago, pero tampoco se trata de un valor altísimo y realmente recomiendo visitarlo, ya que Hanoi, es una ciudad bastante ruidosa y caótica, pero de pronto este punto ofrece la ñposibilidad de relajarse y de ver otro lado de la cultura y de la energía vietnamita.

My Favorite Moment at the Temple

This is something that really caught my attention in this country, as I constantly saw contrasts between a chaotic reality and a calmness whose source was hard to pinpoint. That’s Vietnam for you, and I think this quality eventually becomes an art form.

What I liked most about my visit to this temple was the vivid image of a girl rehearsing a battle, dressed as a warrior—she wasn’t posing for a photo, but was actually being trained. I stood there for a moment, contemplating the delicacy, precision, pause, and calm in that elegant dance class. Although I’ve tried to find out what sport or training it was, I haven’t been able to figure it out.

Esto es algo que me llamó mucho la atención en este país, ya que constantemente se podían ver contrastes entre una realidad desordenada y una calma que no se entendía muy bien de donde salía. Así es Vietnam y creo que esta habilidad llega a convertirse en arte.

Lo que más me gustó de mi visita a este templo, fue la imagen viva de una chica ensayando una batalla, vestida de guerrera, que no estaba posando para una foto, sino que estaba siendo entrenada, me quedé un momento contemplando la delicadeza, la precisión, la pausa y la calma en una clase elegante de allgo. Aunque he buscado de que deporte o entrenamiento se trataba, no lo he encontrado.

As I looked down after standing there for a moment, I noticed some lotus flowers in dark water, and I lost myself for a moment thinking about the life that also exists in that which is simultaneously dying.

Al bajar la vista tras quedarme un momento allí, observé unas flores de loto en un agua oscura, y me perdí por un momento pensando en la vida que había también en aquello que está al mismo tiempo muriendo.

Statues, Luck, and Customs

Something else I’d like to highlight about this temple—which isn’t a temple in the strictest sense, but is instead filled with gardens—is the tribute paid to various masters, whose statues are located in areas that can only be accessed barefoot.

These figures are preceded (or protected) by Vietnam’s sacred animals, such as the tortoise, the phoenix, the unicorn, and the dragon. I also saw a new animal at this temple: the crane. This bronze figure stood on a turtle made of the same material, and people passed by, touched it, and kissed it—so much so that the bird’s bronze chest was shiny, polished by the hundreds of hands that daily place their thanks and wishes there. Later, I discovered that this bird represents longevity.

Figuras, suerte y costumbres

Algo que también destaco de este Templo, que no es un templo en su totalidad, sino que está repleto de jardines, es justamente el honor que se le hace a diferentes maestros, cuyas representaciones se encuentran en sitios a los cuales se puede acceder únicamente descalzos.

Estas figuras están precedidas (o protegidas) por los animales sagrados de vietnam como la tortuga, el fénix, el unicornio y el Dragón. Además en este templo vi a un nuevo animal: la grulla. Esta figura de bronce estaba sobre una tortuga del mismo material, y la gente pasaba, la tocaba, la besaba, tanto que el pecho de bronce del ave estaba brillante, lustrado por los cientos de manos que a diario depositan allí agradecimientos y deseos. Más tarde descubrí que este ave representa la longevidad.
