High up in our trees, we have a little family of cockatoos that are constantly gnawing away at dead wood and dropping sticks and small branches into our garden... its actually pretty useful, as these pieces of dead wood are way too high for me to get at, so I'm glad that they do drop them down so that I can shred them...
... but they have also taken to attacking our gutter guards as well... and in the past week or so, I've had to get up on the roof to put them back up. Not a big deal, but it does old and annoying pretty fast...
... but, some nasty little bird did take out the growing shoot of our lead kiwivine! I was eagerly awaiting the moment when the tip would cross over and we could start training the vine to start shading our out door area... only to wake up to the end having been gnawed off. I immediately blamed the vandalism on the cockatoos... but my little one wasn't so sure, she saw a few rainbow coloured feathers near the scene of the crime, and she seems to think that it was the rainbow ones, the little green ones, or the rosellas that were to blame.
... and she might have a point, it was those smaller birds that have been feeding on the berry bushes nearby and taking a quick nibble off the tomatoes as well. And last Christmas, they tore up the Christmas lights as well. So, maybe I was too hasty to blame the white devils...
A pretty hefty branch dropped out from the largest gum in the front... and this time, I was actually out in the garden to hear it crack and fall heavily to the ground. Thankfully, I was quite a long way away, but something this size whacking you... that would really hurt!
... wtf makes this sort of hole? I'm curious, but not enough to stick my finger down there!
Meanwhile, near the front... the ground covered continues to grow... but crazily slowly! I thought that these were supposed to be fast growers, but they definitely are being overtaken by the weeds and grass! On the plus side, they do give some interesting little blooms.
... and while I was up on the roof replacing the gutter guards, I figured that I should do some trimming of the wattle tree that I had started on last year. Originally, I slashed back the part that overhung the roof... but there were other pieces that I wasn't game enough to reach with a reticulated saw... but with this snipping tool, I could reach further without risking a fall.
So, now there is enough taken off to safely chainsaw the large pieces from ground level without danger of hitting the roof hard. Well, I might use the curved saw blade again, that seemed to work well enough with the other wattle at the front.
... sadly, the downside of having so many trees is the constant cleaning of gutters. It has been quite a while since the last clean... and in the last storm, there was a definitely overflow. The guards do protect against the bulk of the debris, but the silt does eventually build up. So, a slow two day effort to clean out all the gutters... restful, but it needs to be done early in the morning before the Australian Sun makes the roof to hot to work on.
... and this last bit is the handiwork of my wife and kids! Finally putting a rock border around the lavender garden. We will probably try to fill the front section with flowers, and then use rock chips to mulch the rest of the area so that we aren't constantly dealing with weeds!
