While I've been in Perth, I've been quietly itching for a chance to visit the legendary Perth Mint... And I was a touch surprised when my mother suggested that we take the kids to visit it... There is a tour and a good pour demonstration for the public, and she thought that the kids would love it! Plus, she does know that I'm a bit of coin and precious metals collector...
Anyway, the tour of the mint will appear in a different blog post under Travelfeed, but this is the little treat that I picked up for myself on the way out!
And what did I get? Well, I was just looking for a little silver souvenir of the visit and not necessarily something completely heavy on the wallet or too much of a premium. And when I was looking at one of the display cabinets, there were the familiar kangaroo, koalas, and kookaburra silver coins in the 1 ounce weight class... But the one that caught my eye was the Quokka! A native West Australian animal, I've never seen it heard of this one... And I wanted it!
But sadly, the regular 1oz rounds were all sold out and there weren't any 2024 variants yet. So, I upped my purchase to the colourised version that was a 5000 piece run. So much for trying to avoid a premium! Trust me, I was tossing up if I wanted to pick up 3 Oz of plainer coins instead of this... But Quokka!
Opening up the box, I was surprised to see a magnetic clear lid for the box! I've only had the flip tops, so this was a bit novel for me. And underneath, was the Certificate of Authenticity... Not cryptographically signed and attested, but we'll get there once day....
.. A nice soft velvet covering...
And Quokka! So beautiful, I'm really quite happy to see this design, and they have that classic Quokka smile on the top one!
Well, I guess it is one of the last of these coins that will feature the old monarch. I have yet to pick up anything that features the new guy... But soon!
