Rose & Mort
Rose is sitting outside her home which is deep in the countryside, set on a hill and surrounded by woodland. The sun is starting to set and she is gazing over a beautiful view. Her attention switches to something concealed in some shrubbery nearby.
Rose - Ahhh Mort. Come here.
A small boy steps out of the undergrowth. His skin is dark grey, his fingers are abnormally long, he has no eyes, ears or nose and he is very thin. He is able to perceive the world around him with ease, despite his deformity. He cautiously approaches Rose. There is the body of a rabbit in his hands. Its head has been chewed off and there is blood on his ragged clothes and dribbling down his chin.
Rose - What have I told you about making a mess of your clothes?
The boy stands in silence. Rose hears Mort’s voice in her head.
Rose - That’s right. And what have I told you about snacking in between meals?
The boy continues to stare at Rose in silence.
Rose - Indeed. So, what are you going to do about it?
The boy takes a bite of the dead rabbit and slowly rubs more blood over his clothing.
Rose - Eventually, you’ll learn not to test me.
Rose stands up and walks over to Mort. She raises her hand in order to strike him. Her hand starts to fall, then suddenly stops. She smiles.
Rose - How....many times....do I have to tell you? I have....no fear of the things you show me. You have no idea what I’ve already seen. I will always be stronger than you.
After a little more resistance, her arm completes its swing, hitting Mort hard around the face and he is lifted off his feet and thrown to the ground. Rose immediately starts to cackle with laughter. Mort runs off around the house with a jerky but incredibly fast gait.
