Hello there, gamers!
As part of the last games I got with my gift card was this lovely story about cosmic and body horror title "Don't Look Outside." The game has some interesting vibes reminding me of RPG like Mother and Undertale. It has a similar aesthetic. However, it is far more grim about its topic.
The premise is simple, don't look outside. But why? Well, it gives you an instant game over if you do. You even get an achievement if you try looking outside to get a glimpse of the truth. You body is spaghettified and that is al.
As you wake up in your room, this eye on the wall starts telling you about the outside. At first, it tells you it is beautiful. After learning the truth, you speak to it and it tells you that it was a normal person until looking outside transform them. Now he tells you about this cosmic event that will last for the next 15 days and you need to survive during this time. It also advices about blocking the windows and do not fall into the temptation of looking outside. Well, the title of the game also tells you so.
On the gameplay style, this game is a very interesting retro RPG with some gore graphics. It shows you people hurting themselves, body horror and more. It all goes around being a cosmic horror game. The controls are very similar to other RPG of the game style. You can walk and interact with objects. You actions have repercussions on your state. For example, if you check social media you might feel a bit more social, but also makes you anxious. There are other things that will also give you boosts of starts or decrease them. There is a lot to digest on this topic. You can cook food and play videogames. You can also explore the outside of your apartment. But there is danger everywhere!
Combat is relatively easy. You can equip a variety of weapons you find around. There is even a merchant that is a total reference to the one in Resident Evil 4. You weapon gives you some special attacks. However, some of these actions can break your weapon. Ranged weapons need projectiles to be useful. If there are no weapons equipped, you have to fight barehanded.
Once you explore, you can get back to your safe haven and gain some extra EXP if the morale of the expedition was high. I bet getting severely damaged or having some party members killed will affect this. I have seen some gameplays of this particular game and know that there are some people you can recruit and also that there are lots of endings for the story. In that sense, it reminds of Chrono Trigger, one of the most famous RPGs of history that has a plethora of endings depending on what you do.
I love it that some random characters can knock at your door and it will be up to you to decide what you want to do about it. You can talk to them or send them away or just do nothing. That is some solid display of choices.
This is just a slight review of the game since I still need to play it for a bit; but I can already tell it will be the kind of game I will enjoy a lot. I also know I will die a lot trying to figure stuff out. But that is the beauty of these types of games. As long as I do not look outside, everything will be ok. If you like RPGs, this is one you have to try out!
