Hello everyone, you're welcome to my blog today.
Interns are supposed to be paid; you should ask me why we have internships as a pivotal moment in a career. The debate about whether they should be paid or should work for free should be reviewed in today's economy. Offering payments to interns increases the recommendability of the work. Organizations are now moving towards building a resilient, diverse, and high-performing workforce, attracting top talent. The primary benefit of paid internships is the ability to attract high-caliber students, as an internship that is unpaid leaves many unable to accept, even those who cannot afford to work for free. By the time students graduate, and they find out that they will have to do internships without pay, I don't think that will make them happy.
There should be competition when internships are paid. Even if some organizations do not want to pay, it will be understandable if there is a larger population in those that offer to pay their interns. This actually creates a larger and more competitive applicant pool, ensuring that many organizations select the best minds. So, if you're paying them, you know that you are benefiting from their valuable services. It is a fundamental and psychological shift; when interns are being paid, the professional value is often recognized, and they deliver high-quality work because they feel like members of the team, even if they are there temporarily.
Paid interns are more likely to retain projects effectively. This helps interns focus on showcasing themselves as the best by putting in all their focus and effort into the job instead of stressing over working multiple jobs to cover living expenses. Yes, when you pay interns, they can concentrate fully on the work and wouldn't have to juggle three or four jobs to balance their finances. Paid interns are always the case keepers; they favor those who have the safety to network effectively. Paid interns are better positioned to navigate every work situation, ensuring that a student's career is determined by their skill, not how much money is in their account. By paying interns, organizations take a significant step toward their goals; it allows them to have a workforce that works with perspective and life experience, which is essential for the modern global market.
In many countries, unpaid interns work extremely laboriously and narrowly. If an intern is performing work that provides immediate advantages for their employers—effectively doing the work of a regular employee—they are legally entitled to a minimum wage. So, why wouldn’t you pay your interns?
We are currently in the age of social media transparency, and word travels fast. Companies know that fair compensation becomes the expectation of employers, while those relying on free labor are damaging their reputation. That is very true; in our current situation, it is very hard, and if they want to pay you, it may not be much, perhaps around 10,000 or 15,000 naira. What exactly is that supposed to do for the intern? An intern should be viewed as someone who has a long-term job. It is an effective way to make it look like you are potentially hiring them as more than just helping hands. When you pay your interns, you are investing in their development because many of them will perform excellently well for you, and you may want to keep them in the long run.
These people are ready to work and are willing to put in their time; you just have to give them a little appreciation. Instead of hiring people you don't know, you should hire those interns who have been there, who have learned how the system works, and reduce the level of unemployment in the country.
So, at the end of the day, I would say that interns should be paid nothing less than 40,000, 50,000, or 70,000. It would help them grow a long way. Even in the NYSC program that people go for, they are being paid 77,000. So why would you hire interns to work for you and not pay them at all? Looking at the economic situation of the country, interns should be paid. I, as a person and as a health worker, wouldn’t even want to be an intern in a place where I will not be paid.
