Everyone has a different way of living life and how they want to continue their lifestyle. Some people take a good salary but still maintain a minimum lifestyle and do not spend much, while there are some people who, even with a low salary, accumulate a lot of things on EMI or loan and remain burdened with that debt throughout their life. As I said, everyone has a different perspective on living life.
If everyone's salary is disclosed and everyone can see it, then some people may like it because they want to know how much others earn, but some people may not like it because they do not want to disclose how much they earn. It is okay; everyone receives a salary according to their capability. In the same company, you will find people with very good salaries and people with very low salaries too; it depends on the type of work they do. Imagine having a good amount of money saved and that relative who always shows up asking for borrowed money, knowing exactly how much you have in your wallet. So, it would be inconvenient in every possible way, even in small examples like this.
Privacy is not just a right; it is a necessity. Transparency should exist, but only for those who must be held accountable, such as governments and politicians. The attention should primarily be directed there. But anyway, I believe there are limits, and once those limits are crossed, rights become corrupted, and measures like these would create far more problems than solutions. In the end, the ones who suffer and face the worst consequences will always be ordinary people. Privacy is a right that should never be corrupted because, in the end, we would only be giving the government even more power and control over us.
The balance simply does not work. The reason some people are in power or have been in power for a very long time without any opposition challenging them is simply because only a handful of individuals know their secrets. I have come to understand that you are only as powerful as the mysteries surrounding you. If everyone can read you, know what you are up to, trigger your actions and reactions, and conveniently trick you into doing their bidding, then you are defenseless and are not as strong as you think, no matter how rich you believe you are or how rich you look. The world, on its own, is competitive; people try every day to find a reason to keep going or a reason to do whatever they wish, and knowing a person’s secret is a sure way to do that.
The minute income is made public, jealousy is given a voice. Families will compare; friends will compete; employers will value individuals in numbers alone; criminals will see targets; society will use money instead of character to define the measure of a human being, and private thoughts will become the indelible part of every man or woman.
Transparency might be the key for employers to have accountability. Invisible discrimination, salary disparities, and oppressive work conditions may not be able to exist in open sunlight. Employees, who previously remained ignorant of the fact that they were being taken advantage of, may finally push for equal treatment.
However, transparency might result in other types of pressure. Employers might be less inclined to accommodate workers' requests for more time off for fear of reprisal. Workers who are earning insufficient income may be stuck between a rock and a hard place because, even if they are being paid a good salary, they will still be judged and resented.
