I've got nominated by for participating in the "Desert Island Disc Music Challenge'.
This challenge, challenges you to name 5 albums you would take if you were stranded on a desert island for one year with only a device to play them.... I think it's a great challenge but makes you think hard "Which songs can I listen to all year" :)
So here are my five albums I can't miss a year and have to be with me on the island.
1. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffitti
No doubt this is my favorite album. Led Zeppelin was at their peak when this double album was released. I remember getting it, really my first Zeppelin album on cassette back in 1975 I believe. I pretty love every song on here, the obvious favorites, Custard Pie, Kashmir, The Rover, Down By the Seaside and on and on. But my two most favorite songs were In My Time of Dying and Ten Years Gone but the later wins out for the video.
2. Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn't Stand The Weather
Stevie Ray Vaughan changed the musical planet for me. Once I heard him in the dreary 1980's a whole new world of music opened up to me, The Blues! Which ended up morphing into Blues Rock. You could say it was life changing. I like pretty much all of SRV's albums but there is one song that is top of the heap for me from Stevie, Voodoo Child (Slight Return) from the Couldn't Stand the Weather Album. Of course I would choose the later released Legacy edition as it has more songs on it. A close second album would be Live Alive from Stevie.
3. Allman Brothers - At Fillmore East/HItting the Note
This one is kind of cheating. I love the Allman Brothers and I love Warren Haynes, who played with the Allmans for many years. So I am somehow going to morph these two albums together, the first of course their classic live set at the Fillmore East in NY in from 1971 and the classic song Whipping Post (video). But I also wanted to get Warren in there, and since he was with the Allman Brothers for years, Hitting the Note is my favorite album from that part of their career. Two videos.
Old Before My Time from Hitting the Note:
4. Eric Clapton - Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
Eric Clapton is way up in my top groups and while I like a lot of his music and albums I have to defer to the Derek and the Dominos album that he cut with Duane Allman, Carl Radle, Bobby Whitlock and Jim Gordon. There are many many great songs on this album but of course the creme de la creme is the title song, Layla, a true classic of all classics. Part of the reason I became such a huge EC fan to be honest. Pretty much every song on this album is just great.
5. Deep Purple - Burn
Picking another album was very very difficult and I probably missed some really good albums due to my poor memory. I decided on the Deep Purple Album Burn, mainly due to my favorite DP song, Mistreated. I love this song, it was my favorite song for a very long time. I really like slow bluesy songs and this one is a classic in that vein. With Ritchie Blackmore's guitar work and David Coverdale's vocals, I could listen to this song all day long. The rest of the album is pretty darn good also. Maybe some of you recall my post about this song in various forms by a number of bands.
I would like to nominate ,
