Daily Painting – Capsicum Take Two (Purple Edition!)
Hi folks, here we are again — challenge day 15 or so. Still going strong.
Okay, I lie… this morning was an effort. I had a VERY rare opportunity to sleep in and instead of choosing sanity, I got up to finish this painting… lol.
I did however sleep in until 6am, which is super late for me, so that counts as luxury.
Yesterday I decided to repaint the capsicum, thinking about where I wanted to go with this series. Purple is opposite yellow on the colour wheel, so I went with that — and wow, it really does make the yellow pop. That being said, i think i prefer the first one? my kids despite their love of purple said the first one is better...
to be fair it might need another 20 mins work... but again... "daily painting" so not today...
🎨 Colours Used
Background
- Dioxazine Purple
- Red
- White
- A tiny touch of Cad Yellow Medium
(Just enough to mute the purple and harmonise it with the capsicum.)
Foreground
Honestly… a neutral something.
I couldn't tell you exactly — it was whatever neutrals were already on my palette:
- Red
- Yellow
- Burnt Sienna
- Raw Sienna
- White
a touch of purple
It gave me a plain looking but complicated colour on the floor... bit of purple, bit of yellow... so a bit matchy matchy.
Shadow
My optical black combo:
- Dioxazine Purple
- Phthalo Green
- Burnt Umber
Makes a very deep neutral without ever using tube black.
The Process
This one was meant to be fast — and it was — but I totally forgot to do an underpainting. Colour was already on the canvas before I remembered. I did manage to get the darks underneath the capsicum itself before tackling the yellows, so at least there’s some structure underneath.
I was slightly worried about this painting because the values are closer together than yesterday’s version. Less dramatic, more subtle. I still kind of like it though…
Maybe I’ll do it again tomorrow and try another colour combo?
Any sugesstions ?
Off to GOLD CLASS!
I’ve gotta dash — we are off to Gold Class to see Wicked again.
The new movie is coming out soon and I want the girls to see it on the big screen.
Both of them can be a bit funny about the cinema, so I figured watching something they already know well is a good warm-up.
See you tomorrow!
