There's a feeling music fans know well. You found an artist before anyone else did. You were telling people about them when they had 200 followers, or heck, you may have been their only follower. You made the playlist. You shared the link. You showed up to the show when it was in a room with 40 people.
Then they blew up. Which felt great. And also felt like absolutely nothing changed for you, well, because it didn't.
You still pay the same subscription fee. You still get the same algorithmic recommendations from the top labels because they have the money to buy the spots, not because the music is actually good. You still have no stake in the thing you helped build by being early.
BlockTunes changes that. If you're early on an artist, that should mean something financially. Let's get into how that works.
How Edition Ownership Works
Every track minted on BlockTunes has editions, up to 10 per track. An edition is on-chain proof that you own a piece of that specific song. It's not a collectible that sits in a wallet doing nothing but making you feel silly for buying it. It pays you.
Here's what happens every time that track gets a qualifying play:
- 16 $MUSIC is minted fresh on-chain and 0.1 HIVE is paid from the streaming pool
- 50% goes to the artist, always
- 40% is split among all edition holders based on how many you hold
- 5% goes to BlockTunes
- 5% goes to whoever referred the artist (or back to the artist if no referral)
That 40% holder pool divides based on how many editions exist and how many you hold. If a track has 10 editions and you hold 2, you get 20% of the holder pool on every play. Automatically. No claiming. No wallet interaction. It just shows up.
The cool thing about having both MUSIC and HIVE paying out is that HIVE is something you can easily swap for Bitcoin, Ethereum, or whatever else you want. You can take that off the platform and do what you like with it. The MUSIC you keep is your utility token, it's what gives you access to editions, AI tools, and everything else on the platform. Two separate streams, two different purposes.
What a Qualifying Play Means
Not every second of audio triggers a payout. That would be trivially gamed. A qualifying play is a genuine, uninterrupted listen that meets the platform's minimum playback threshold. We keep the exact number private to prevent gaming. The engine watches for real engagement. When a play qualifies, the payout fires immediately.
The Early Advantage Is The Real Alpha
A track can be minted with up to 10 editions. The artist sells them at 100 $MUSIC each. You pick up 2 editions early.
That track starts getting 50 qualifying plays a day. Your 2 editions earn you 20% of the 40% holder pool on every play.
Per play: 16 MUSIC x 40% x 20% = 1.28 MUSIC plus your share of the HIVE payout.
Think about it like this: 50 plays a day can earn you 64 MUSIC and some HIVE per day just from holding those 2 editions. Every day. Without doing anything.
Now imagine that artist has a breakout moment and their play count goes from 50 to 500 a day. Your earnings scale with it. You got in at 100 MUSIC per edition. The math looks very different now. This is what being genuinely early on an artist can mean when the platform is built right. But being this is the early stages of a small platform, if you want your income to grow, we are going to ask for your help to get the word out!
The Listen Page
The Listen page at app.blocktunes.net/listen is where you discover music. Every minted track on the platform appears here automatically. No listing fee. No curation gate.
Browse by genre, filter by language, search by artist name. The player keeps the music running continuously through any filtered list. If you're listening to hip-hop, the player queues the entire hip-hop catalog. Same for jazz, house, techno, drum and bass, ambient, and every other tag on the platform.
Buying Editions
When you find a track you want to hold, click on the edition link on the song and it takes you it's NFT page where you can buy editions directly from the artist, or from the secondary market if they've sold out, it's actually all listed in the same place... Payment is in $MUSIC. All you need a Hive account and some MUSIC tokens to get started.
You can get MUSIC through the Trade page built directly into BlockTunes, or on Tribaldex, on Hive-Engine. If you need HIVE, the base token for the blockchain, the HiveExchange lets you swap Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and other assets to and from HIVE, and you can do this all without leaving our app!
What You're Actually Holding
As we have stated before, an edition is an NFT on the Hive-Engine sidechain. It's provably yours, transferable, and sellable. You can list it back on the marketplace at any price. If the artist's play count has grown since you bought in, the edition's value reflects that history. You are essentially buying stock in your favorite independent artists on the blockchain!
It's not a picture of a pet rock or some silly monkey. It's a revenue-generating asset tied to a real song that real people listen to, and is how it should have been done from the beginning.
Who Should Be Doing This
If you discover music early and want something more than a Spotify playlist to show for it, BlockTunes is built for you.
If you're a curator, influencer, or just someone who has always been the person whose recommendations people actually follow, you've been working for free. That ends here! Now, let's be clear, this isn't get rich quick money, but it's something, and can only grow overtime as we all grow!
And hey, if you know any artists you want to invite to Blocktunes, go to your A&R Dashboard, everyone has one, get your referral link, and if they create an account using your referral link, you automatically get 5% of their streaming revenues, for life, or at least as long as we are around... Future isn't guaranteed for anyone...
