The Post is directed by Steven Spielberg and it's about Katharine Graham, the first woman to own a major American newspaper, The Washington Post, and her decision to publish highly classified goverment documents exposing the corruption of the Vietnam war and the presidents who signed off on it which would mean risking her fortune and even her freedom. The Post stars Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Bob Odenkirk from Breaking Bad, Michael Stuhlbarg from Boardwalk Empire and Jesse Piemons from the Matt Damon cloning lab.
I was bored when I watched this and now that I'm reviewing it I'm bored remembering it. I enjoyed absolutely nothing about it! First of all it starts off with an awkward sequence where the guy who actually gets these documents is in Vietnam, then he's speaking to some twats on a plane, then he steals the documents in question, then we don't see him again for about an hour and a half! We're then introduced to Meryl Streep, if she's in a film it's a fucking snoozer, and there's nothing interesting or intriguing about her character at all!
We're also introduced to Tom Hanks and as the film goes on it becomes clear that his character shouldn't have been the lead, this should have been a story about Katharine Graham and the film should have focused on her but most of it's spent with Hanks, the only moment that mattered with Graham was when she had to decide whether to publish these documents or not, that's it, she's supposedly passionate about running a newspaper but there's no evidence of that, all we see is her having little parties and asking others what to do.
Being the first female publisher of a major newspaper there's an underlying theme of sexism and women not being treated as equals but the film doesn't seem to address it appropriately, if anything it just makes women look bad! Graham just seems weak and shows no initiative until the last five minutes and the film's almost two hours long! She's extremely underdeveloped and the film wastes so much time on shit that ultimately does nothing to serve or move the narrative along. I was invested in nothing, I cared about nothing!
There's a serious lack of focus throughout the entire film, time is simply spent where it ought not be! There's also quite a few scenes with characters talking over each other which is very irritating and none of the characters are likeable, I mean, what's the risk here? That these rich fucks can't have dinner at the White House any more? I couldn't give a fuck mate, the focus in my opinion should have been the guy that actually obtained the documents, that would have made for a much more interesting story, not these fucking toffs running around!
So, to summarise, it does nothing for women, it wastes time on shit that no one cares about, none of these characters are likeable, it takes an hour and a fucking half to get to the fucking point, you could maybe make an interesting 10/15 minute short film and learn everything you learned from this nearly 2 hour film, Meryl Streep is boring as fuck, Tom Hanks doesn't care anymore, Spielberg doesn't care anymore and neither do I, I'm gonna give The Post 5.4/10 and advise everyone to do anything else.
