Our retired postal workers group has a monthly luncheon at a different location every month. This month our meeting was at Fairmont Park Racetrack. This was my first time to attend a live racing event.
The first part of the walk was getting to the track. They had parking attendants to show you where to park. We must have had "Park me in the far left corner because I like to walk" written on our faces. But we DO like to walk so it was no problem and the weather was beautiful. Plus the parking was free (a pleasant surprise) and the admission was only $1.50 apiece to get into the track area.
I always notice flowers and they had these beautiful pots of flowers all around the grounds on the outside of the track.
We walked around the track area trying to find where we were supposed to meet for lunch - the directions by the person who set up the reservation left a little to be desired. We finally found our reserved room on the 3rd floor where there were sky boxes for viewing the races from our table. Along with about a bazillion TV screens in case you didn't actually want to watch the races LIVE. (Kind of the point of going to track I would think.) Our lunch was set for a hour before the racing started so we had plenty of time to enjoy lunch. Here's and the other members of our table - we had 6 tables in all filled. Our group is coincidentally called the St Louis Pony Express!
This was a race in progress, taken from the sky box window:
Neither my husband or I knew anything about horse racing or betting but there were a couple of people who were happy to help. You had to go to the betting area to place your bet. If you think putting your money into STEEM is a risky business, how much money do you think was thrown away by this crowd?
This was my pick - Number 2 - named Summer Disco (which is how we selected him, strictly because of the name, lol). I put a $2 bet (BIG SPENDER) on him to SHOW, which means I bet he would come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Here's what the betting stub looks like:
And here's a shot of good old Summer Disco as he's being led to the starting gate. Looks like a winner doesn't he?
Well the bad news is, he came in 4th place, which doesn't count anything for me. But wait - the good news - there was an infraction during the race by the horse who came in 2nd and he was disqualified. So Summer Disco moved up to 3rd place and my $2 bet won me $6. Yea! Now I can retire! Oh wait, I'm already retired.
After lunch was settled and Race 6 was about to start we headed downstairs and walked around the area just outside the track. Here's the starting gate that was just put on the track prior to the horses being loaded in to start the race.
And here we have them pounding for the finish line!
I hope you enjoyed sharing my walk around Fairmont Park. We had a great time!
Thanks to for bringing us this #wednesdaywalk challenge each week! It's great fun reading and viewing what everyone has been experiencing.
