Mr Rotondo is a man who recently gained some questionable fame as a 30 year old forced out of his parents' home by way of a legal process. In her NY Post article titled Deadbeat son is a sign of America’s failure to raise boys Karol Markowicz believes that Rotondo may be a symptom of a flawed approach to raising boys in America. Writes Markowicz,
Part of the problem is we’ve been encouraging girls at the expense of boys. The language of empowerment we use around girls is absent from how we talk to boys. The expectation that males will succeed just because they are male has been smashed, just like feminists wanted, but now what? To shrug our shoulders and not care what happens to a generation of young men is to produce a generation of Michael Rotondos, adrift and living at home as they enter their 30s.
She may very well be right and makes her point eloquently. And, while I do not seek to remove the responsibility from each and every individual, the environment young men find themselves in is often indeed toxic and demotivating. So, like I said, she may have a point - and the problem is definitely real and not something we as a society can afford to ignore.
