This time of year is always really special to me. Forget for a second that Fall has always been my favorite time of year, October is the month when my wife and I got married, so we usually try to do something special despite the busyness of our lives.
This year is extra special as we celebrate fifteen years married to each other. For the first couple of years we would travel to the Northern lower peninsula of Michigan for our anniversary. At five years I booked us a trip to Chicago. It was my first time ever visiting the Windy City and I have to admit it was a pretty amazing time.
At ten years we went to Nashville or Vegas. I actually can't remember right now. I think we went away, but it wasn't in the fall, we waited until Spring Break and that was when we took our trip. In case you didn't know this already, and I both work in public education, so getting away in the Fall can prove difficult.
Don't get me wrong, plenty of people do it, but we usually don't like taking time off from work when the staff and students are still trying to get their feet under them. In fact, we didn't even take a honeymoon when we got married so we could get back to work.
How sad is that?
We finally decided this year, that we aren't getting any younger and the district won't burn down without us, so we are going to be doing some traveling.
And there it is... The theme for this weeks #threetunetuesday post sponsored by .
Travel
It's something we dream about but always tend to put off because of time, funds, or something else. I'm taking back my time as of right now.
LFG!
I realize that I might need to relinquish my "man card" when I say this, but I love the Indigo Girls. Sure, there is a pretty demographic that makes up the majority of their fans (not that there's anything wrong with that), but their song writing and harmonies are some of the best in the business in my opinion.
"Get out the map" fits perfectly with my new attitude about travel. I love the line "I'm going to love you good and strong while our love's still good and young". Granted, fifteen years isn't really young, but as I said, we aren't getting any younger, so let's live life to the fullest while we can.
Many of you may not remember this, but back in the day, we didn't have Google Maps, Android Auto, and Apple Carplay (or whatever it was called). Those people who talk about printing off directions from MapQuest aren't even scratching the surface of how it used to be. They had it easy!
I'm talking about Trip Tik's. After you planned where you were going, you would drive down to the local AAA (Triple A) branch and have them create a trip tik for you. Check out this site for more info about what it was like. That's right, you had to flip the page as you got from one part of the map to the next. Can you imagine!
Ahh, the memories...
Quite some time ago Bon Jovi did a duet with the country band Sugarland as part of the Crossroads program on CMT (Country Music Television). "Who says you can't go home" became Bon Jovi's first #1 hit on country radio and it led them to the revelation that they wanted to create a "country" album.
"Lost Highway" is the culmination of that desire and the title track is what I am sharing here with you today. While I don't feel it is Bon Jovi's best album, it is different enough from their original stuff that I feel it stands alone.
I remember when this album came out, I think and I even attended one of the shows in the "Lost Highway" tour. Anyway, I felt this song really fit well in the theme of traveling. One of our favorite things to do when we travel is head out into the country or desert and just do some driving and exploring.
You better believe I plan on finding a lost highway or two on our upcoming trip.
I just hope we get something cool for a rental car.
Finally, there were about a million different titles I could have picked as the third song. "Traveling Man" by Rick Nelson, "Rambling Man" (Seger or Allman Brothers), "Jet" by Paul Mcartney and Wings, "Leaving on a Jet Plane", but instead, I settled on "Jet Airliner" by the Steve Miller Band.
It's just an awesome tune it really needs no explanation right?
This trip is going to be the first time my wife and I have flown since before Covid and I need to admit that I have a bit of trepidation about it. The first time I was ever on a jet was in my early 20's and we were flying to Iowa for a job that I was working on. I kind of fell in love with flying, but as the years have passed, I find I don't enjoy it as much as I used to.
You might think it's the pandemic, but that isn't the case. In fact Covid has zero to do with my current hesitation.
It has more to do with the fact that he cost to fly is so high and they treat you more like cattle that they are herding than customers or human beings. I wish I could have known what it was like to fly in the 60's and 70's when you had miles of space around your seat and an easier time getting on board and off.
Sure, things probably weren't as safe back then and you had to worry about secondhand smoke and hijackings, but still, it just looked a lot more luxurious from the photos I have seen.
The anecdote about feeling like a sardine in a can isn't too far off these days is it?
Barring a sudden bull run, I can't afford that upgrade to first class either.
Anyway, that's what I have for you this week. A nice travel post. If you plan on doing any traveling this season, I wish you Godspeed and by all means, listen to some great music on your way!
