In today's article, we'll briefly cover Idle Protocol, an interesting Solana-based project that that turns your idle computing resources (CPU, GPU, bandwidth) into publicly accessible API endpoints, which can be used by AI agents for tasks such as AI inference, web scraping, and DNS queries.
In return, you receive a steady stream of USDC stablecoins.
Coinbase's x402 Protocol
All tasks completed via Idle Protocol are run through the x402 payment protocol.
Coinbase developed x402 so that AI agents would have a standard way to exchange value with one another. It originally launched on Base, but has since been integrated into Solana as well.
Even though x402 transaction volume spiked and crashed at the end of 2025, it has been gradually recovering. This boom-and-correction pattern is a common with new tech as initial excitement gives way to more organic growth.
Given the efficiencies of agentic commerce, we can safely assume that the number of AI agents will rise as time goes on, and there are plenty of projects like Idle Protocol preparing for this new crypto-powered, agentic economy.
Idle's Network Growth
The Idle network has been growing on multiple fronts.
The number of nodes participating in the Idle network has been on the rise, climbing from a few thousand in mid-May to roughly 70,000 within a couple of weeks.
Idle Protocol has announced partnerships with Grass, Nodepay, Ray Distributed and more, enabling multi-network earning for nodes on the network.
They also recently announced mobile support with their Progressive Web App (PWA), allowing your smartphone to earn USDC while serving resources to AI agents.
X Hack
Last week, Idle Protocol had their X account compromised via a SIM hack, causing the token price to suddenly collapse. Some users claimed the project was a scam due to the spam posted by the attacker.
Despite the setback, the project pushed forward with an alternative X account until the original one was restored. Although the on-chain network itself remained unaffected, some users who fell for the phishing attempt did lose assets in their Solana wallets.
This serves as a reminder to always exercise caution when you see unannounced airdrops on social media such as X or Discord.
Tokenomics
The IDLE token has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. As of late May 2026, roughly 895 million tokens are in circulation (104 million tokens have already been burned).
What drives value to the token?
15% of all USDC payments is collected as a protocol fee. 10% is used every hour to buy IDLE on the open market and burn it, while the other 5% funds development. This puts deflationary pressure on the token.
Until next time...
Considering the rapid growth and expanding partnerships, Idle Protocol looks like a promising project.
That said, remember that none of this is financial advice. Promising projects can collapse in a heartbeat, especially those with low market caps. Know the risks, and do your own research before getting involved.
