One of the craziest things about life is the laws that we humans choose to live by. Because every functioning society runs on a set group of laws. And while some things are legal in one country, they might be illegal in another. The amazing thing is that we all, as a collective, choose to accept these laws and follow them religiously, even though they were made by people like us. And also because people who do not follow the laws tend to end up in prison. But that’s by the way.
Anyway, as I said, these laws are made by people like you and me. Not smarter intelligent people, just people that we put in power. And the laws are usually a reflection of the needs of the people at the time that they were passed. Like currently, we have a lot of laws protecting against cyber bullying ad online stalking and whatnot. Ten to twenty years ago, those laws were nonexistent. But because people kept committing them, they had to be made.
And this decides just how the world is run. You could go to sleep one day, and by the next morning, you could wake up to a different reality. One new law has been passed that has stripped you of everything you’ve worked for, or a law that suddenly makes your business illegal. And just like that, you’re staring at the possibility of serving time in prison.
Take, for example, the people who deal in single-use plastics. They buy, import, distribute, sell… the whole nine yards. They do it all! It was a good business, and they were making a lot of money. Until the government bans it. And just like that, they became contraband. The very product the entire business was centered on is now illegal. And you’re just supposed to accept it.
That’s the rule of law. It won’t matter if you’ve owned your home for a billion years, if your government decides that a government project would be beneficial on that land, then you’d have to go. They’d simply take it, and there’s nothing that you can do about it. The government already has a law that no one can own any real estate forever. But only for 99 years, then it reverts to the government. It’s the law.
And then, we still follow the law, even when the people who set them don’t hold up their end of the deal. We’re being told to file taxes and pay them. But we have to live in a society where we provide our own security, power, transportation, health care… then you wonder, what exactly are you paying taxes for? What exactly have you used all the taxes you collected to do? But then, it’s the law, we’re meant to follow it.
I won’t lie. This life is scary. Being led by people who don’t care about you, they do whatever they want with impunity, and expect you to swallow their lies without any question. Because when you question them, you’re setting yourself up for possible arrest and imprisonment. Yeah, they conveniently ignore the people who steal and embezzle billions from the nation, but then try to prosecute those speaking up against the injustice of it all.
But then, what can we do? It’s just the law. We’re supposed to follow it, right?
P.S: This is not a call to not follow the law, but for us to find ourselves once more and realize that we’re more than sheep being led to slaughter. Find a way to change things within the law, and then make that change permanent.
At this point, we don’t have a choice, do we?
