Normally, people have the right to decide what exactly they want going into their bodies and that of their babies as well. And regardless of how good it is, or how groundbreaking it might be, it still ends up being a choice. And no one can make it for you, besides you. That’s why some major surgeries, before they’re done, will require the express permission of the person, or their guardian, even though it’s a procedure that will save their life. They still reserve the right to reject such a procedure.
There is something called the DNR policy, which means DO NOT RESUSCITATE. The majority of people who have these cards have made up their minds that if, for any reason, they slump and are in a medical emergency, the medic must not do anything to revive them. Most of the time, people with terminal illnesses take this route because they don’t like the routine of almost dying, being brought back to suffer the same thing, and then almost dying again.
An even more popular example is the transfusion of blood. Many people have been known to reject blood transfusions simply because their religion forbade it, and they died as a result. Avoidable deaths, but they reserved their rights to reject procedures. And that’s how it is. No one can force you or your child to undergo a procedure that you don’t want. That’s the law.
But then, all these are because they don’t affect others. When you refuse certain procedures, the consequences will be borne by you alone, and not the rest of the world. Once it starts affecting everyone around you, it stops being about you, and it starts being about society. That’s why, while sleeping around isn’t a crime, there is a rate at which you’ll sleep around that you’ll be investigated. If you’re doing it hoping to infect people with sexually transmitted diseases, it becomes a crime. If anyone dies from that disease, you’re easily looking at murder.
So, when it comes to babies, it becomes tricky because they are very fragile and their immune systems are not as strong as ours in handling stuff. This is why vaccination is recommended for babies, but as a parent, you can choose not to get your kid vaccinated. However, if your child does get the disease they should be vaccinated against, they could end up infecting kids who are yet to get vaccinated. In this case, though, I don’t know if it can be considered a criminal act.
In the end, everyone will only do what they believe is the best course of action for them. Regardless of the consequences. Well, in my opinion, if it involves the safety of society, then some rights might be bent a little. After all, that’s why we have quarantines during pandemics and outbreaks, because it’s no longer just about one person, but about everyone! Other than that, everyone has a right to do whatever they want, provided they’re willing and ready to bear the consequences for their actions.
We’re good.
