A break from beer to cover some culture. Yeah, not a single bottle was drank. I’m taking a day. There is this new drama on the schedule of the Croatian National Theatre named One Song a Day Takes Mischief Away.
It’s a middle class family drama set in 1930s. Husband has a drinking issue and doesn’t spend enough quality time with his wife. Rings a bell? Nah, I treat my lady real nice. Main guy is not a villain, he is a pretty happy and jocular, he just doesn’t pay attention to her. Enter Fulir, the typical swagster prince Charming, who sweeps her off her feet. I’m not spoiling the end but in this piece it’s more about the journey than the resolution.
We get to enjoy the cultural references to 1930s which still strongly resonate today. Only, there is a charming quality to it. The way people talked, the way they dressed, the norms of the society. Lack of any kind of electronic communication and amusement as we know it today. Simple. Straightforward.
What didn’t really change is how we drink! We still steal away to meet important friends or discuss worldly events in the nearest bar or pub when it calls us. I’m the first one to admit I do it maybe a bit too often.

Though, it is very hard to enjoy it as much if you are not familiar with the real life setting and vernacular. That’s what makes the most of its verisimilitude.
Other than the drama itself I took some photos of the theatre. Really impressive. Made in late 19th century. Lots of Vienna style architecture and design influences there.
