Pelayo and Elisenda were a peasant couple who lived in a very remote area. One particularly rainy day, they made an astonishing discovery: an old man sitting on the ground with enormous wings sprouting from his back. Pelayo ran to the village to find the priest because he thought he had seen a real angel. The priest tried to communicate with him in Latin, but he couldn't; the old man didn't utter a single word. The priest then said that if the supposed angel didn't speak the language of God, he probably wasn't an angel at all, but something else. The strange winged being was also thoroughly examined by the village doctor, but he too found no explanation. So Pelayo and Elisenda ended up locking him in the chicken coop, scorning him, and even charging five cents to anyone who wanted to see him, until one day the old man disappeared.
Pelayo y Elisenda eran una pareja de campesinos que Vivian en un área muy apartada. Un día particularmente lluvioso, ambos hicieron un hallazgo impresionante, era un hombre viejo sentado en el suelo, de su espalda salían alas enormes, así que Pelayo fue corriendo al pueblo en busca del sacerdote porque pensaba que estaba ante un verdadero ángel, el sacerdote intentó comunicarse en latín pero no lo consiguió, el anciano n dijo una sola palabra, entonces el sacerdote dijo que si el supuesto ángel no hablaba la lengua de Dios probablemente no fuese un ángel sino otra cosa. El extraño ser alado también fue minuciosamente examinado por el doctor del pueblo pero él tampoco encontró explicación, de modo que Pelayo y Elisenda terminaron encerrándolo en el gallinero, menospreciándolo e incluso cobrando cinco centavos a todo el que quisiera verlo, hasta que un día el anciano desapareció.
This is a short story by the famous Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez, one in which, as was typical of him, magical realism reigns. I think his intention was to criticize the way people trivialize the extraordinary, even the divine, but instead exploit what they don't understand for purely economic gain. I found it very sad, and even felt a sense of importance, to see the mistreatment the old man suffered: he was locked in a chicken coop, his wings were burned with a cattle branding iron, and the townspeople were even charged to see him as if he were merely an attraction. This speaks to the extent to which people can become desensitized to what they don't know, to what they consider different and "strange."
Este es un cuento del famoso escritor colombiano Gabriel García Márquez, uno en el cuál, como era habitual en él, impera el realismo mágico. Pienso que su intención fue criticar la manera en que las personas banalizan lo extraordinario, incluso lo divino, pero en cambio explotan lo que no comprenden por puro interés económico. Me resultó muy triste e incluso me llené de importancia al ver el maltrato al que fue sometido el anciano: fue encerrado en un gallinero, le quemaron las alas con un fierro de marcar reses y hasta cobraron a los habitantes del pueblo por ir a verlo como si él fuese solo una mera atracción, esto habla de hasta que punto puede llegar a insensibilizarse la gente con aquello que no conoce, con lo que considera diferente y "extraño"
It's a way of showing that humanity works in curious ways. For example, on one hand, we have the priest who observes the old man with religious curiosity, wondering if he is indeed in the presence of an angel, but then rejects the idea, believing that an angel must necessarily speak Latin, as if God had no other means of communication. He didn't even bother trying to understand him through other means. The doctor, on the other hand, viewed him with scientific curiosity, trying to study what was human in him and what was animal, the reason for his condition, and so on. The peasant couple viewed him with purely economic interest, exhibiting him as an attraction and charging for it. And the townspeople initially showed interest, but then lost it when a more "fascinating" attraction arrived. And yes, unfortunately, that's how we human beings are: insensitive, indifferent, incapable of seeing beyond what is right in front of our eyes.
Es una manera de demostrar que la humanidad funciona de manera curiosa, por ejemplo por un lado tenemos al sacerdote que observa al anciano con curiosidad religiosa, dudando si está o no ante un ángel, pero luego rechaza la idea por considerar que obligatoriamente un ángel debe hablar latín, como si Dios no tuviese otros medios para comunicarse, ni siquiera se tomó la molestia de tratar de entenderlo por otros medios. El médico por su parte lo veía con curiosidad científica, tratando de estudiar que había de humano en él y cuanto había de animal, el porqué de su condición, etc, la pareja de campesinos lo veía con mero interés económico al exhibirlo como una atracción y cobrar por ello, y la gente del pueblo lo vio con interés al principio pero luego perdió ese interés cuando llegó una atracción más "fascinante" y sí, así lamentablemente somos los seres humanos: insensibles, indiferentes, incapaces de mirar más allá de lo que tenemos ante nuestros ojos.
