As a baker, caterer and an event decorator,I am proud I took this step 5 years ago to learn this skill, after I graduated from secondary school,I began teaching and I taught for like 5 years waiting for my dad to sponsor me to university,he placed me on when government will pay their retirement because he was a civil servant but as year go after years while teaching I began to oversee a lot of things, my eyes began to opened to things I didn't understand. I'm teaching and I can boldly say I was trying then that my boss (proprietor) will always tell me to put other teachers who has qualified certificate then through whenever we have teachers seminar.
There was a day ,I was told to interview a lady that came to apply in As a teacher,and when I asked her qualifications,she said B.S.C in Accounting but when I ask if she can take accounting for Senior secondary class and she said "No" I was shocked ,after she left I sat down and now wondering about my life. Job is now scarce in Nigeria,only people who are influencer mostly do get even when they are incompetent. I don't know anyone at the top neither do I have money for tips.
I told myself, success is not defined only by formal education,it is defined by value,as long as I have what people value about me,that's is success, being proud of my life that I build. So, after so much thinking, I decided to learn a skill instead ,when I told my dad then ,he was furious because he loved school so much but that decision was the best decision of my life.
I went to make enquiry and I started catering school. Since cooking was my hobby then, making it into a profession and been financially independent, I learnt cooking baking and still furthered into event decorations and planning. Most graduate still come out to learn a skill after years of being unemployed or not satisfied with their payment,I have taught many students that are graduates and some lose both ways because they insisted on going to that school even when they know their family isn't financially capable,money and time wasted.
Now,catering isn't just an hobby of mine but a career that pays my bills, a skill that gave me more values that I am proud of. While it is a therapy solution for me ,it's also serves as money making at the same time ,digital work can't give me that. Even when the market is saturated,as long as you know your game, people will always come for your work because it will always be your own craft.
