(Girona Cathedral from the old wall).
I heard of a legend as I wandered through the grounds of Girona Cathedral, once upon a time as all folklore begins, there was a woman, living in Girona, who was said to practise witchcraft, one day she started throwing stones at the Cathedral.
(Courtyard of graves inside the Cathedral).
Other versions of the story say she was throwing the stones at people taking part in religious processions. Hissing and causing a scene.
(Historical catholic figures at the entrance. Green screened out for Game Of Thrones).
As explained by Carles Vivó in the book 'Legends and mysteries of Girona', it's evident that her targets were religious symbols.
(Ancient tapestey work shows the story of Christ).
Then one day, when she was getting ready to throw another stone, the woman suddenly turned to stone; she was placed up on the highest point of the building, looking down so that no more curses could come out of her mouth.
(The widest Gothic nave in the world).
Now what is said to be the only human gargoyle on Girona Cathedral can be seen looking iver the city for centuries.
(Courtyard).
Catholic churches always make me feel uneasy. Historically they are not very holy and tell many tales of murder, deception and corruption. Even in the modern world religion is frought with drama and problems.
(Cathedral back from the gardens that surround it).
What an incredible place to just wander. So steeped in history and folklore, these ancient streets give you a taste of the dark ages, middle ages and every other significant period of human history. Well worth a visit!
