Here is a faux fur coat I just completed for a Burning Man client. He selected the white/silver fur to go with his silver art car, which I also clothed here: https://steemit.com/art/@creationofcare/seamstress-for-burning-man
The lining is a colorful galaxy print on spandex. The coat is reversible.
The front features a subtle chest pocket.
I haven't done a coat commission since I moved my studio back home. I really don't have much room to do my specialty fashion design work anymore, my focus being on small leather items now. But I needed the gig, and took on the challenge.
Sewing with faux fur requires special techniques.
When cutting, only the backing of the material should be snipped, lest your fur look like it's been given a really bad haircut.
Pieces need to be matched along the edge and all the fur swept inside. Then, when it is opened, all the fur trapped in the seam allowance must be combed out with a blunt tool.
Seam allowances must then be sheared of the excess furry bulk before installing the lining.
Using spandex to line a coat has its own unique issues. It is so stretchy, it slips and contorts without an infinite matrix of pins to stabilize it.
Despite these challenges, I was successful in completing a finely made, fun-fur coat ready for the playa! (And I will be vacuuming Coat Hair Golems for weeks to come!)
Cheers!
