When I was just a child, I always enjoyed the interaction I had with the person who cut my hair. To be completely honest, that connection is essential when it comes to asking for something that fits both the parents' requests and the child's own preferences. It is quite beautiful to remember those moments in the chair, where the barber becomes a mediator of sorts, trying to find a style that makes everyone happy. Today, I had a session that took me right back to those memories.
A young client came in with his mother, and they were looking for a specific balance. His mother preferred a low, traditional school cut, something neat and easy to manage for his daily classes. However, the boy was looking for something a bit more modern. To be honest, kids today are very aware of current trends and they want a look that gives them a casual touch without losing that formal essence required for school. My job was to merge both visions into a single, clean look.
I decided to perform a military-style cut, keeping the top quite short and uniform, just as requested for a disciplined look. I combined this with a subtle fade on the sides that was sharp enough to make the boy feel confident. It is quite beautiful to see how a small adjustment in the technique can satisfy two different points of view. While I worked, we talked about his favorite subjects and how he felt about his new look. The result was a silhouette that was both professional for a student and stylish for a young man.
By the time I finished, both were very satisfied with the result. The mother liked the tidiness of the military length, and the boy loved the modern feel of the fade.
