In a not so surprising turn of events, U.S. Attorney general and resident of the 1950's Jeff Sessions has decided to focus the drug war on the least harmful illegal drug there is. Hell, it's less harmful than (legal) alcohol and many prescription drugs which cause 10's of thousands of deaths per year due to car wrecks, overdose, and many other secondary causes.
Before I get into the political repercussions, let's take a look at our government's whacked out drug scheduling...Let me point out that MJ is in the same class as HEROIN which has killed at least a dozen people I went to high school with in the past year. Nobody has died from weed that I know.
Schedule 2 drugs, which have accepted medical use by prescription kill thousands per year and there is an opioid epidemic in this country with millions of addicts to drugs prescribed by doctors.
So what is the reasoning / basis for putting drugs in these classes?
Well, here's the list for schedule 1.
Schedule I Drug Basis
I want to point out that (according to NIH https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/marijuana-medicineMJ) even just CBD oil (which doesn't even get you high) helps people with many ailments such as seizures, epilepsy, muscle control problems associates with MS, sleep problems, stress, etc. It does have legitimate use.
Sure, maybe a few stoners doing 25 mph in their car hit someone and there's a few deaths or injuries per year or some people eat too much and their stomach aches..... But that pales in comparison to the number of legal prescription and alcohol deaths per year in the United States. And maybe it makes people lazy or even relaxed. OOOH scary! Let's classify it in the same category as heroin and bath salts.
But on to my point...the possible political backlash to this country's unstable policy on drugs (and taxes and a lot of other things that disrupt and ruin the lives of so many people).
In 2016, the Republicans won some surprising swing states (by a narrow margin and lost the popular vote but won the electoral college). I want you to look at five states that are usually considered swing states. Republicans won all but Colorado out of these five states to the surprise of many, including the mainstream media. This handed Trump and the Republicans the election (the house, the senate, and the presidency).
If some of these states lose tax $ and people can't get their medical MJ or their recreational relaxation, they may get mad enough to vote the other way and it could be enough to tip the balance in the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate in 2018 elections and maybe even hand over the presidency to the Democrats in 2020. That is if the much anticipated tax reform doesn't save us all (which I think it is just gonna make mine and a lot of other people's taxes more complicated).
We'll see what happens in the coming years but even a lot of cops say that policing and waging a war on a drug that has benefits and is barely harmful is stupid and a waste of taxpayer money when there's so much heroin, meth, etc. killing people via overdose, violence by the users, gangs turf wars over drugs, and cartel violence. We also spend billions incarcerating MJ users and dealers which is mostly a victimless crime. stupid stupid stupid. But that's our government.
I think Jeff Sessions made a huge mistake for his party. I don't particularly like either party. Like I said, I'm a libertarian and both parties attempt to take away our basic freedoms because of their ideology. Republicans want to be the morality police (Jeff Sessions: good people don't smoke marijuana...abortion bad...anyone who's not a good Christian bad...gays bad, etc). Democrats want to pick our pockets through high taxation and I think they're just as corrupt and harmful as the republicans.
Just something to think about. I'll be curious to see how many seats the republicans lose next year. I'm also kind of mad about the crypto tax laws they slipped into the tax bill (no like kind exemption = heavy tax burden for investors and traders). But that's material for another post.
Have a good weekend all. And if you live in the U.S., good lord are you tired of policy changing on a whim ever few years yet? Let's get a libertarian movement going and kill the two party system or at least give it a run for its money.
We can't change anything if we don't take action so for the love of God please go out and vote even if it's for a third party candidate and make our voices heard! You have more than 2 CHOICES PEOPLE!
Let's elect some people who will let us make our own decisions like the free people that we are supposed to be!
