I could maybe only eat some insects as an exotic food but excluding cockroaches while snakes and rats are out of the question as there is no way I would eat them, not in a million years. But of course there would be an exemption if there is a matter of life or death.
The only exotic foods that I am fond of eating was the frog (not the toad) and there are several occasions that me and my friends and my eldest brother went into the fields to catch some frogs. We used snails as a bait as the worms are not that favorable to handle for us.
Only skilled hunters catch the frogs by hand because as soon as the frog swallowed your bait you have to hoist it up in the air and catch the frog by hand keeping in mind not to let it escape from your hand because they are so slippery.
The black river snails are the best exotic food for me because it is prepared quite differently and not immediately otherwise your dish will taste like mud and the soup gritty with sand. It is prepared by putting it all in a clean pail with water and then allowing it to expel slime, grit, excrement and mud.
After that you are ready to cook it by tapping the pointy part of the shell thereby destroying that part of the snail so once cooked you can easily suck the meat out to eat it. I usually enjoy eating it with rice and I was fortunate when I was still able that I managed to cook and eat some on my own.
The beetle and the mole insect are the ones that I wanted to try, I want them crispy fried and lightly seasoned. This coming wet weather in the coming months some of these exotic foods would be available if you know how to find them but as for me I can just crave for them and hope that somebody out there would bring me a ready-made one for me to enjoy.
