My week is packed with so many things—work, school—and that’s why every time Sunday rolls around, it feels really special. Maybe it’s because it’s a much calmer day compared to the rest, and it’s a day that invites you to slow down and enjoy the simple things. That’s why one of the things I always love to do is have an afternoon snack with my family around the table, with hot coffee and a freshly baked homemade cake.
The kitchen becomes a very special place, starting with the aroma of coffee and the scent of the freshly baked cake, and along with that come conversations, laughter, and the sense of peace that every member of my family brings. This time it was a very moist, fluffy chocolate cake—the kind where one bite makes you want to keep eating all afternoon. Plus, coffee is the perfect drink to go with it, creating a combination that no one can resist.
Every Sunday afternoon is different, and it’s not just about a cup of coffee with cake or a cup of coffee with a cookie. Rather, it’s about those moments that unfold, where everything starts with an idea and ends up becoming something incredible. Here, my mom starts by making the coffee and pouring it into each cup, while my sister bakes the cake, and before we know it, we’re all pitching in to make sure our afternoon snack turns out perfectly.
This is one of my favorite combinations—a cup of coffee with a chocolate cake—since the intense flavor of the chocolate and the bitterness go together perfectly, and the best part is that everyone in the house loves it. That’s why that moment becomes a family gathering, the perfect opportunity for us all to be together, since surely many families would love to have moments like this.
That’s why, on that Sunday that flew by so quickly, I managed to enjoy my family, the smell of coffee, a slice of cake, and above all, the fact that, in the end, that’s what life is all about. It’s about taking a moment any afternoon to share with love, and realizing that the little plans are the best. And as the coffee and cake grow cold, I write these words.
